                    [00:00:18] Speaker A: Good morning.
[00:00:19] Speaker B: Good morning everyone.
[00:00:20] Speaker A: Happy fall.
[00:00:22] Speaker C: I love it.
[00:00:23] Speaker B: I do love. I, I love October. It may be my favorite month. So we, and we have lots of fantastic events.
Special guest today. So we're just gonna jump right in by saying first, Suzanne's not here.
[00:00:38] Speaker A: Big surprise, as you can tell.
[00:00:41] Speaker B: But she is at a three day designation boot camp, which is an amazing state training that she has been invited to. So we know she's off getting great ideas and re energized to bring those things back to Smithville and DeKalb County. So we miss her, but we will try and soldier on.
[00:01:04] Speaker A: Just go ahead.
[00:01:04] Speaker B: That's right. And first off, our favorite thing to start off with is our new Chamber members.
And I want to say a big shout out to Caddyshack smithville there at 301 S. 3rd St. Sweet C in downtown Smithville. The owners are Tim and Cindy Hayes. And if you got a rainy day, don't know what to do. The kids got the Wiggles and you want to blow off some extra energy, this is the place to check out. It's very family friendly, friendly. It's a sports bar, have golf simulators. You can practice, play, hang out. But most important, it's meant to be a hangout place for, for families and everyone.
So they're a full blown simulator bar, which I've got to go check out to see what that means because yeah, I think they're together. Yeah, like simulator plus bar. Yeah, I think they're very family friendly, but they have all sorts of games and full s pool tables. They really want to make a go at that. There's nothing to do for the kids in Smithville.
[00:02:14] Speaker C: It really is nice. They have like golf simulators that are, I think they have three booths that are really nice, really good.
[00:02:19] Speaker B: So. So next time you hear someone say there's nothing to do for young people, say, hey, check out third Streets, Caddyshack Smithville. So thank you very much for joining the Chamber.
And our next one is Sedwig Airbnb which is at 105 West Walnut.
Smithville is Ann Sedwick. And we love the Airbnbs as they are coming into downtown Smithville. It just, it just is a really neat feel to be able to combine businesses.
You know, the retail, the services, the churches, everybody working together and to have a few of these really neat spaces to be.
[00:03:04] Speaker A: Airbnb.
[00:03:05] Speaker B: Yeah, really, really, it's really nice to see. So welcome to Sedwig Airbnb as.
[00:03:11] Speaker A: And we've had two ribbon cuttings in Alexandria. So A lot of stuff going on down there. Mercantile Markets is 107 public square in Alexandria. Owner is Jamie Bates. They have booths filled with treasures, antiques, candy, gifts, clothing, curated fines and more. Yes. And then the Alexander Coffee and Cafe. New owner is Ashley Hickson. Espresso smoothies, frozen blends, chai tea, latte, vitamin water and other non coffee drinks. Brunch items, salads, soups and pastries. Wow. Shop their vendors with handmade crafts, antiques and other unique goods. Watch for their special days like coffee with a cop.
[00:03:49] Speaker B: Now if I had little ones. Oh, man.
When our kids were little, they loved to shake hands with the police officers. It did not matter where they were. They wanted to go up and shake their hands. So that's really cool that they're doing that.
[00:04:01] Speaker A: And coffee with the mayor helping to feed those in need opportunities and more. Check out their Facebook page for up to date info.
[00:04:07] Speaker B: She's very community centered and we, we are grateful to see her taking that over and doing what she's doing with it. Next we have one of our regulars, Pastor Chad Ramsey from Smithville First Baptist Church to give us an update on what you all are doing.
[00:04:27] Speaker C: Yeah, a lot of cool things. It's October. We made it to that month.
[00:04:32] Speaker B: Got through the opening of school.
[00:04:34] Speaker C: That's right. So hopefully things calm down and we get to enjoy the, the weather. I know there's a lot of fun activities coming up here. I know one of my favorites, that chili cook off, which we're talking about later. It's coming up around the corner too. But we are excited about what's going on the church. The big thing coming up is our fall festival.
We do that every year usually. We always did it right after the boo bash, which I believe the boo bash is still on Halloween on the 31st, they moved the football game, made it senior night and it was gonna be on a Thursday. Now it's on a Friday. They did this a couple months ago. So we decided we're going to put our fall festival this year on the 29th. So on that Wednesday night.
[00:05:14] Speaker B: Oh, that's great.
[00:05:15] Speaker C: So anybody can come to that. We'll feed the community. Anybody wants to come.
[00:05:19] Speaker B: Because we love senior night. We hate for people to have to choose between going to football games.
[00:05:24] Speaker A: So much going on.
[00:05:25] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:05:25] Speaker C: This way like kids can get candy on probably Wednesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday.
[00:05:31] Speaker A: And they're still eating it a month later.
[00:05:33] Speaker C: All right, so. And they're all sponsored by the local dentist of Smithsville.
[00:05:38] Speaker B: So.
[00:05:38] Speaker A: Yeah, dentist love Halloween.
[00:05:39] Speaker B: That's right.
[00:05:40] Speaker A: That's favorite Time of year.
[00:05:41] Speaker C: That's right.
[00:05:43] Speaker B: When's the best time to go to the dentist?
[00:05:45] Speaker A: I don't know.
[00:05:46] Speaker B: 2:30? 2:30. All right.
[00:05:50] Speaker D: Anyway.
[00:05:51] Speaker A: There you go.
[00:05:51] Speaker B: This is my joke for the day.
[00:05:53] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:05:53] Speaker B: Everyone looked at their watch. What the heck?
[00:05:55] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:05:58] Speaker C: But we are excited about that. That's going to be on the 29th. Everything starts that afternoon. So we'll have stuff on the billboard in the community so that people can know how to get plugged in that it's all free as always. I have inflatables, fun stuff outside that's going on there.
You know, we're gearing up already for our.
The breakfast that we're gonna be doing in November, but also that same weekend leading into our the Thanksgiving holiday. We always do a community outreach and we do just people can get a food box that has all kinds of the makings for the Thanksgiving meal. We do fresh ham that they can come grab and all the sides, all the fixings. And we're even working with another large food pantry. Distribution center out of Murfreesboro is going to come in and do some things with that. That's all going to be that following Saturday. So November is just as busy as all that. But we're going to. We're excited about October and all the stuff going on there too. So.
[00:06:59] Speaker B: So we'll have time in November to talk a little bit more about our prayer breakfast. But we. But we. We thank you so much for hosting that every year. And Def.
[00:07:10] Speaker C: The dates.
[00:07:10] Speaker B: November 20th.
That's the Thursday before Thanksgiving. So one week prior, it starts at 7am we will get you out at 8am so it is a wonderful way to start the holiday season.
[00:07:28] Speaker C: Absolutely.
[00:07:29] Speaker B: With prayer together as a community.
The men's group does the cooking. It's always so fun.
[00:07:35] Speaker A: Fabulous job.
[00:07:38] Speaker B: And tickets are only $5, so they' be more information. But we did want to say our speaker this year is Captain Larry Cripps. He is the author. He's local author. He is the author of the Hope of War. He has served as a chaplain for the. In the military for many years. Wrote this book out of inspiration of the. Of his life work as a chaplain.
[00:08:05] Speaker A: And we had him as we had him at the library too for we.
[00:08:09] Speaker B: Did a book signing.
[00:08:10] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:08:10] Speaker B: And so we're really excited about having him and having him be a part of the prayer breakfast. So November 20th. Mark your calendar.
[00:08:20] Speaker C: There you go. There you go.
[00:08:21] Speaker B: Anything else?
[00:08:22] Speaker C: I'm good.
[00:08:22] Speaker B: All right.
[00:08:23] Speaker A: Thanks for the time.
[00:08:24] Speaker B: You are good.
[00:08:25] Speaker C: Y' all have a Good day.
[00:08:26] Speaker A: Thanks. Mother dad.
And our next guest is from Ascension St. Thomas Hospital, Isaac Heller. Tell us what's going on at the hospital.
[00:08:34] Speaker B: Look what color your tie is for those on the radio.
[00:08:37] Speaker A: Oh, yeah.
[00:08:38] Speaker E: It's funny, you know this. It was appropriate. It came in last night. I had ordered this Ascension St. Thomas Breast cancer awareness tie and I saw it on my doorstep last night. I thought, well, I should wear it tomorrow.
[00:08:50] Speaker B: There you go. Very appropriate for today.
So what is breast cancer awareness?
[00:08:56] Speaker E: Yeah. So, October, we recognize that many people are diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime. A few statistics, one in eight women in the US Will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point, point in their lifetime.
Another key statistic is in 2025, over 316,000 women and 2,800 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Invasive breast cancer. And when caught early, the five year survival rate is actually 99%. So really hopeful if you catch it at the right time.
[00:09:36] Speaker B: Yeah, catch early is the key, right? Yeah, exactly. And so as a part of breast cancer awareness, can you tell us a little bit about the hospital's services and what somebody might expect if they went to the hospital for a mammogram?
[00:09:52] Speaker E: Yeah, yeah, absolutely. So we offer screening mammograms and if you're over 40 you could talk with your provider and see if you're a good candidate for a screening mammogram. And you can schedule that mammogram by calling Ascension St. Thomas DeKalb Hospital's radiology department. And that number is 615-21553.
And again, I'll mention it one more time for those that maybe didn't catch you at 615-215-5310 and you would call during business hours from 7:30am to 5:30pm.
[00:10:28] Speaker B: And we have done this a lot in the past, but we are opening up to everyone to participate in wearing pink and coming on down to, to the county courthouse, the steps. I'm pretty sure it's on the west side, isn't it, that you wear pink, come out Tuesday, October 7th at 9:30am so anyone who is downtown, I know that the courthouse folks all participate in that, but we, we encourage anyone, if you are a breast cancer survivor or want to promote the health and well, well being in this area, wear pink. Come on down next Tuesday, October 7th at 9:30 at the courthouse.
[00:11:17] Speaker E: Yeah, that will be great. We're excited about that. One more thing I wanted to mention is for, you know, some people have a really high deductible insurance or they don't have insurance and they plan on paying themselves.
And you know, those. Those folks are a good candidate to go on mdsave. If you just type mdsave in your search bar, it will come up. And what you'll find there is that you can buy a voucher for a 3D screening mammogram for $240. And so then you just, you. You get that voucher, you bring it to the hospital. Of course, you have to schedule first, but you bring that to the hospital and that will take.
Take care of your mammogram.
[00:11:58] Speaker B: Wow, that's great. That's. That's great.
Anything else going on with the hospital?
[00:12:04] Speaker E: A lot of stuff. But that's a lot of good things going on with the hospital. But of course, that's our.
[00:12:10] Speaker F: Our.
[00:12:10] Speaker E: Our main thing right now is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
[00:12:13] Speaker B: Well, and a little shout out to leadership DeKalb.
Isaac is in our class this year. And so we had our big start yesterday or Monday, and big first opening retreat. We'll talk a little bit more about that. But thank you so much for being a part of our community. This is really great to be getting to know you.
[00:12:32] Speaker E: Yeah, it was so much fun. And y' all do a great job with Leadership DeKalb. I learned so much just on. On Monday, so I look forward to.
[00:12:40] Speaker A: A lot more learning.
[00:12:40] Speaker B: And he was our newbie. We asked, you know, how many, how many years had someone been into cab? And some people say their whole lives. And. And then we get down to like, okay, months.
[00:12:51] Speaker A: Yeah.
Weeks ago.
[00:12:55] Speaker B: So welcome and thank you so much for what you're doing for DeKalb Hospital and the health of our community.
[00:13:00] Speaker A: Thank you. Thank you.
[00:13:03] Speaker B: And who. Someone who slid in right here is.
Oh, are we gonna skip?
[00:13:10] Speaker A: All right, we're gonna go back. We're gonna go down to Habitat for Humanity chili cook off and bake salad. And Sharon Evans is here. Sharon, tell us what's going on.
[00:13:20] Speaker G: Good morning.
[00:13:21] Speaker B: Good morning. It's our favorite time of the year. It's chili season.
[00:13:25] Speaker G: It is chili season.
Don't think about that today when it.
[00:13:29] Speaker A: Hits probably 80 something.
86. Yeah, we're sweating. Yeah.
[00:13:33] Speaker B: When we see Sharon, though, we think chili.
[00:13:35] Speaker A: That's right.
[00:13:37] Speaker G: But I want you to think houses as well.
[00:13:40] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:13:41] Speaker G: Because what's very exciting is there's something Habitat happening before the chili cook off.
[00:13:46] Speaker B: Okay, great.
[00:13:47] Speaker G: We, this Friday, we are inviting anyone interested in learning about home ownership through habitat to come to a meeting. We are ready to start taking applications.
[00:14:01] Speaker B: To build a home.
[00:14:04] Speaker G: So this Friday, if you or Anyone you know is interested in learning more about how do you purchase a home through Habitat for Humanity, you should come to First Baptist Church either at 12 noon or at 5 o'.
[00:14:19] Speaker B: Clock.
[00:14:19] Speaker G: We're having two separate meetings.
[00:14:21] Speaker B: Same, same information.
[00:14:23] Speaker G: Same information.
Either or you, of course, don't need to be at both of those, but they will be. We will have some Habitat staff members there to explain how the program works, what the criteria are and start helping folks to fill out that application.
So we are going to be taking applications for home ownership until October 30th.
[00:14:47] Speaker B: Oh my goodness.
[00:14:48] Speaker G: So it's time to build.
We've been talking about, we've been raising funds for a long time and it's time to use it.
[00:14:55] Speaker B: Great built.
[00:14:56] Speaker G: So if you or anyone you know is interested First Baptist Church, we're using the activity center which is faces the Methodist church. It's the door where the parking lot.
[00:15:08] Speaker B: Where the parking lot is.
[00:15:10] Speaker G: Parking lot is not in the LEC.
So you want to go there at 12 noon or 5 o'.
[00:15:15] Speaker A: Clock.
[00:15:16] Speaker G: If you can't make that, that's okay. There are applications available for homeownership for the program at Wilson bank of Trust. They're available there. Or you can call the Upper Cumberland Habitat for Humanity office and they will answer any questions as well.
[00:15:31] Speaker B: And I don't mean to put you on the spot, but what number house is this for?
[00:15:36] Speaker G: This will be the seventh. It's amazing over a long period of time.
[00:15:42] Speaker B: Lucky number seven.
[00:15:43] Speaker G: Lucky number seven.
[00:15:44] Speaker B: That's right.
[00:15:45] Speaker A: There you go.
[00:15:46] Speaker G: So that's why we're having the chili cook off.
[00:15:48] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:15:48] Speaker G: So if I can tell you about that.
[00:15:50] Speaker A: Sure.
[00:15:50] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:15:52] Speaker G: So the meeting is this Friday the 3rd. Homeowners October 3rd. And the chili cook off is going to be Friday, October 24th.
So we're excited about that. As long as the weather holds. We'll be downtown on the.
[00:16:06] Speaker B: We love it outside downtown. Keep fingers crossed that the weather is together and everybody's just outside.
[00:16:12] Speaker A: It's really nice.
[00:16:13] Speaker G: But we will will move to the county complex if we need to. So they are kind to to reserve that space for us if we need it. From 10:30 to 1 though, you can come downtown and for $10 you can get a foam bowl and a drink. A foam bowl to fill and taste all the chili you want. If you like souvenirs, we have some 25 ceramic mugs that you can take home with you. You and you get a drink with either of those.
So far we have 16 teams making chili and one of them is caddyshack your new member.
So we're excited about that. We've got 16 teams. Do you want to know who they are?
[00:16:55] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:16:55] Speaker G: Okay. Middle Tennessee Natural Gas, the Amvets First Bank, Liberty State Bank, Wilson bank, the T Cap county elected officials, Farm Bureau, State Farm, Wyatt's Wild Ice.
I said Caddyshack. The DeKalb County Democratic Party, the Backbone Road Supper Club. They're new.
The high school FCCLA group.
[00:17:25] Speaker B: Oh, that's great.
[00:17:25] Speaker G: Smithville Electric, NHC and Center Hill Masonic Lodge.
[00:17:30] Speaker B: Wow.
[00:17:31] Speaker G: So we have a few more spots, but 16 teams.
[00:17:34] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:17:35] Speaker B: Great. Yeah.
[00:17:36] Speaker G: And some new ones and some. Some veterans.
[00:17:39] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:17:40] Speaker A: And get there early because don't wait till the last minute because you know you could run out of chili if.
[00:17:45] Speaker B: You have any flexibility in your lunch hour.
[00:17:49] Speaker A: We walk over from the library between.
[00:17:52] Speaker B: 11 and 11:30 is better than between 12 and 12:30. I'm just gonna. I'm just gonna throw it out there. There's always chili, but you may know there's always chocolate.
[00:18:03] Speaker G: A fresh, fresh pot. We've got some sponsors, too, and I want to thank Ranger Brank. I'm sorry. Ranger Break, Smithport Cabinetry, and A Plus Heating and Cooling. They are sponsoring. We've got space for more sponsors, too.
[00:18:16] Speaker A: If you.
[00:18:17] Speaker G: If you would like to sponsor, and.
[00:18:19] Speaker B: I know several churches in the area and some other folks do the baked goods. Yes.
[00:18:24] Speaker G: Or if you. Your organization or your church would like to bake for us, we would love to have your baked goods as well, because we sell those separate. And sometimes we get. Has such and such brought their special cake.
[00:18:38] Speaker B: So get there early if you want your baked spicy chili. I know I like to eat that spicy chili and then go, yeah, I need something sweet.
So it's always good to have.
And that gives somebody an opportunity that they're not part of a team and building, you know, baking or cooking 5 whole gallons of chili, you can still contribute. You can still be a part of the great efforts that you all do to. For housing that Habitat for Humanity does. It's a group effort.
[00:19:11] Speaker G: We really appreciate our teams, our bakers, the city and county are very generous to help support this event.
[00:19:19] Speaker A: Take somebody working together.
[00:19:21] Speaker G: Yeah, it's a great. It's a great day.
[00:19:23] Speaker B: Well, so good to see you on the 24th.
[00:19:25] Speaker G: Thank you.
[00:19:26] Speaker B: Thank you.
This Saturday, we have a bunch of things this Saturday.
[00:19:30] Speaker A: Lots of stuff.
[00:19:31] Speaker B: So we're gonna try hard to get them all in. For folks, this. The. All of these events are Saturday, October 4th.
Alexandria's Old Timers Day is this Saturday. What a Great fun event that is is from 9am to 2pm I don't know how long they've been doing this for, but it's, it's a great event. [00:20:29] Speaker A: Meet your neighbors in Alexandria.
[00:20:30] Speaker B: That's right. And support the local businesses there around.

[00:21:15] Speaker B: Yeah, we've got, we've got first Friday coming up.
So we talked about the fourth, but we're gonna back up just one day and talk about Wags, what's going on Friday the 3rd. And of course we love our downtown businesses, but Rocky Jeans is doing something fun this, this month. Tell us all about it.
[00:21:34] Speaker H: Before I even mention that, I want to go back just a little bit to the art walk event we had.
[00:21:39] Speaker B: Oh my gosh, it was so awesome.
[00:21:41] Speaker H: It turned out wonderful. We just want to thank all the artists that came out, everyone that supported them and our sponsors, especially First Bank Home Services. So it was a great event. It's getting better every year. So I know a lot of hard work goes into it and everyone done.
[00:21:56] Speaker B: A wonderful job this year and the weather cooperated. It was really great and I think.
[00:22:01] Speaker H: We'Re gonna have great weather this Friday too.
[00:22:03] Speaker A: Such a no rain in the forecast. Through.
There you go.
[00:22:08] Speaker B: So First Fridays are sponsored by the Smithville Merchants Alliance. There are so many fun great shops downtown Smithville now and this is something that they do every first Friday. So tell us about what you have going on this Friday.
[00:22:25] Speaker H: Rocky James will be having the Spooktacular pet parade. We've tried this once before. The weather did not cooperate. But it was still good, but this time it's going to be great.
So you can bring your pets down, dress them in their costumes. We're gonna be raising a little money for the DeKalb Animal Shelter, selling tickets to vote on the costumes.
And I know a couple of the other shops will have fun things. Mailroom's gonna have their photo booth open. That's always fun. She's hosting the Cookie Tree.
If you've been in Button Willow Coffee Shop, seen those giant chocolate chip cookies. If you've caved and got one, you.
[00:22:56] Speaker A: Know it's all delicious.
[00:22:59] Speaker B: It's worth it.
[00:23:01] Speaker H: So we've got a bunch of stuff going on down. And that same night, the Harvester's doors at 4. He's doing Motown Review.
Oh, great business. Everyday people will start performing at 7:45. So we're encouraging everyone to come down, set up a lawn chair, watch the pup parade and watch them strut their stuff.
[00:23:19] Speaker B: Right. Well, tell us a little bit more about Rocky James, because I was in there not too long ago and I just was blown away about your wonderful things that you have in there.
[00:23:28] Speaker H: Well, Sherry and I opened that back in the spring and it's still a win. Work in progress. And we take all the feedback we can get, but we're having a great time with it. We sell all kinds of pet products.
We've got collars, leashes, beddings, things for your cats. The fun stuff, the necessity stuff, ear wax pads.
[00:23:46] Speaker B: I mean, if you have a doodle or a poodle, you know you need that.
[00:23:53] Speaker H: Like I said, if there's anything we don't have that you need, you're welcome to let us know and we'll try to get. Get it in for you.
[00:23:59] Speaker B: Well, and it's really fun too, for.
For folks who are.
Who love their pets, love to socialize their pets. That's really great that you're doing the event on Friday.
[00:24:09] Speaker H: Place to socialize too. Just coming in the shop. I tell everybody if it's a rainy day and you can't take them to a park or take them to a walk, you can bring them downtown and bring them in the shop and just let them spend.
[00:24:18] Speaker B: Oh, and it is smells galore for a little dog.
I like this corner where the treats are and.
[00:24:28] Speaker H: But I think that's about what we've got going on this Friday. It's a lot packed into one knot, but it's gonna be a blast. And then we've got a few other things coming up for the month. I mean, we're pretty much Kicking off the holiday season this month. So she already told you guys about the habitat Chili cook off. That's great. We're all looking forward to that.
Pumpkin Festival Saturday 11th, 10 to 3 around the courthouse. Free admission, lots of fun stuff for the kiddos and boo bash. Trick or Treat Downtown is Friday 31st and that's going to be from 2 to 5 this year. So you can bring the kids down, dress them up. It's great for the family and safe environment and we all enjoy seeing them.
[00:25:11] Speaker B: So yeah, we, you know, we're getting the most out of those Halloween decorations.
[00:25:17] Speaker H: Getting ready.
[00:25:18] Speaker A: I have my fall stuff. Now it's time to of going to Halloween.
[00:25:21] Speaker B: Yeah, right.
[00:25:21] Speaker A: So I got the totes. I'm ready to bring it out. Yeah.
[00:25:25] Speaker B: Awesome. Thank you so much.
[00:25:27] Speaker A: Thank you.
[00:25:28] Speaker B: I did talk with the folks who are putting on the health fair and this is put on every year by Health Springs and we setting up a table there co sponsored by the Smithville DeKalb Senior Center.
It's really geared towards senior health, but anyone is welcome to. Welcome to come. The event is outside at Family Medical Center. You cannot miss the big tent. Just drive toward Family Medical center.
[00:25:58] Speaker A: Look for the big seniors.
[00:26:01] Speaker B: It's 302 North Congress Boulevard and the starting time is 9am and it wraps up around 12.
There's lots of free activities with Medicare, including health screenings, games, door prizes, refreshments. So come on out. Family Medical center and Cigna Healthcare teams will. All sorts of folks will be there. Lots of fun, lots of fun things. And we want to say big thank you to Cigna Healthcare, Family Medical Center, Wilson bank and Trust and the DeKalb Senior Centers for their sponsorship of that event.
[00:26:36] Speaker A: It's fun and the weather's going to be nice. I remember one year it rained so hard the water was running down through the boat. The tables. Yeah. Yeah. But this year's gonna be beautiful.
[00:26:44] Speaker B: It was a splash pad.
[00:26:45] Speaker A: Yeah, it was one of those. Yeah. But you know, people came out.
[00:26:48] Speaker B: Oh, yeah, yeah. It's great. And. And again, there are free health screenings that are going on. The whole point of it is to encourage healthcare among our senior population. So we really encourage everyone to take advantage.
[00:27:02] Speaker A: Turn out, turn out. And one of our guests today is from Haven of Hope, Ro. And tell me how you pronounce your last name.
[00:27:08] Speaker I: Kerber.
[00:27:08] Speaker A: Kerber. Okay, Rose Kerber, tell us what's going on at Haven of Hope.
[00:27:12] Speaker I: Well, my name is Rose and I'm really glad to be here.
[00:27:15] Speaker B: Thank you for this opportunity.
[00:27:18] Speaker I: Just a little bit about Haven of Hope. I've been with them a little bit over a year now. My specialty, counseling. I'm one of the therapists, and my specialty is addiction and working with those who struggle with addiction.
Most likely, many families know someone or have someone who they've been affected by the addiction, whether it be drugs or alcohol. It's kind of all the same.
So another positive thing is working with Recovery Court, which is through Smithville, the DeKalb County Court. And I think it's just a beautiful opportunity to give people, you know, those that struggle with substance abuse, an opportunity to better themselves without having to sit in a prison or sit in jail.
[00:28:10] Speaker A: Give them a helping hand.
[00:28:11] Speaker I: Exactly. Exactly. It's very strict, but they need to be. And I just think that it kind of helps all around because you figure when people are incarcerated, you know, the money to take care of them comes through the taxpayers. So this gives them an opportunity to step up and make a change for their life themselves. Absolutely.
Absolutely.
We do have four different counselors at Haven of Hope.
All of us kind of have different special.
Excuse me, specialties. We have two therapists that work primarily with children.
And then I enjoy working with, like I said, those who struggle with substance abuse. Also, we're involved with Safe Baby Court. We get a lot of referrals from them as well.
And most of the time, anyone that's put on probation needs to come in for an alcohol and drug assessment just to find out if there's, you know, some other kind of treatment that they could benefit from to overcome their addiction.
[00:29:15] Speaker B: Addiction.
[00:29:16] Speaker I: So just on a personal note, I struggled with addiction, and many years ago, and I got to the opportunity to go to a treatment center, and it definitely changed my life.
And I know that just from my own personal journey of recovery, family members hurt a whole lot more because it's like, you know, for. But the one that struggles with addiction, it's like you're kind of in the nightmare, but you're oblivious to it. And for the family members, it's like being in the nightmare wide awake.
[00:29:53] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:29:53] Speaker I: And not having resources, knowing what's going on. Exactly.
[00:29:56] Speaker B: Well. And not being the one who really, you know, I mean, like, you can care for a person, but they. It's their journey.
[00:30:03] Speaker A: They've got to help themselves. They got to want to help themselves.
[00:30:05] Speaker I: Absolutely. Absolutely.
[00:30:07] Speaker A: You can be there, support them, but they need.
[00:30:09] Speaker I: Yep. And you have to be really cautious with that because you don't want to. You don't want to boil over to enabling their behavior.
And so I really encourage family members to get involved. They have zoom online meetings for family members either through Al Anon or Naranon or Koanon. And that really helps to support, support the family and give them some guidelines on setting boundaries.
[00:30:37] Speaker B: Yeah. And, and how to be a partner.
[00:30:40] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:30:40] Speaker B: In, in helping.
[00:30:41] Speaker I: Absolutely.
[00:30:42] Speaker B: Love that. Love that. How could someone get more information?
[00:30:46] Speaker I: You can call Haven of Hope.
[00:30:48] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:30:48] Speaker I: And get something set up for therapy. We do take 10 care. A couple other insurances we do as well. But if you call and talk to Kathy or Lisa, they can run your insurance, insurance benefits and hopefully get you on the road to recovery.
[00:31:03] Speaker B: And what's that number?
Oh, sorry. Call the chamber.
[00:31:07] Speaker A: I'll take it back. Suzanne. Suzanne will get it to you. That's okay. That's okay. Suzanne will have it. Yeah.
[00:31:14] Speaker I: And unfortunately, nobody remembers phone numbers anymore without your phone.
[00:31:18] Speaker B: They're like, I don't even know about phone numbers. I'll just Google it.
[00:31:21] Speaker A: What's your phone number? I don't know exactly.
[00:31:25] Speaker I: So. And I think the beautiful thing about Haven of Hope is that all of us are very passionate about what we do.
[00:31:31] Speaker B: Right.
[00:31:31] Speaker I: You know, we want to see the people within the community.
[00:31:34] Speaker B: It's a very warm, very warm, inviting, caring, beautiful, beautiful group of people. You can tell, like you just walk in the door and you just, you just know you're in the right spot.
[00:31:46] Speaker I: Yeah. And you know, and just another piece on it too is that you don't have to struggle with addiction or you don't have to have children who are, you know, through dcs. You know, maybe something you might need to do is just have a person to vent to, you know, and just coming in and talking. I always say it's giving our family members a break from hearing us complain. You just go and make an appointment.
[00:32:12] Speaker B: Right.
[00:32:12] Speaker I: And vent to a therapist.
[00:32:14] Speaker B: Well, because a lot of times use is self medication a way to mask those, those or cope with stress rather than dealing with those stressors. So grief, financial, family. I mean we all have stresses. And so that, that's a wonderful reminder to all of us.
[00:32:33] Speaker A: Thank you, Ms. Rose, for what you do there.
[00:32:35] Speaker I: Thank you so much. I appreciate you.
[00:32:37] Speaker B: And I reminded me that I think Haven of Hope, but I know Safe Baby Court, Recovery Court, they're doing a coat drive, coat and shoe drive this month. And, and I know Haven, I hope, is one of the drop offs for that for coats and shoes gently used or new.
But, but we've got a lot of folks in the court system who that, that's going to benefit them to be able to do that, you know, as not today as the weather gets. No, but October is the time when, when the weather turns and we think about our little ones who are standing out waiting for the school bus with no coat. So this is a great, a great opportunity to participate in that coat drive as well.
Thank you very much, Rose. DeKalb Prevention Coalition is also hosting their annual Fall Take Back Drug day. That's Saturday, October 25th, 10:00am to 2:00pm There are two locations. The Smithville.
[00:33:43] Speaker A: Yeah, they're having a new place.
[00:33:44] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:33:44] Speaker A: City Hall.
[00:33:45] Speaker B: They're having it instead of City Hall. It's right there where everyone goes.
Center of the universe, Walmart.
So there is a tent outside kind of on the side there that will be the collection site. And you don't have to, it's not going to be manned. You don't have to wait for someone to accept it. It's just left like one of those boxes that almost looks like a post office box. Once, once you drop that medication in, the door shuts. And, and it's very secure. Alexandria City hall is the other. So bring your unwanted, expired or unused medication. And there will also be a safe disposal for vape vaping products as well.
[00:34:28] Speaker A: I think last year they had, I want to say 40, I don't know, 40 pounds of it or maybe a little bit more than that. It might have been 60 pounds.
[00:34:36] Speaker B: And you just think about how little they, you know, they weigh. But, but this is a great time.
If you have a loved one who has passed or someone has moved out and you don't know what this medication is, it doesn't have to be a medication that would be harmful.
It could be, but it's for any medication that you're not sure what to do with it. You don't want to, you don't want to put it in your garbage. You don't want to put it in the water system.
This is an annual thing. We're so glad that they are willing to do that. So the two locations, Smithville, Walmart Alexandria Senior Hall Saturday, 10-25-10 to 2. 10 to 2.
[00:35:19] Speaker A: Look who's here.
[00:35:20] Speaker B: Oh, it's our favorite down under love.
[00:35:25] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:35:27] Speaker D: From down under and live under the hill.
[00:35:30] Speaker B: Emily Bell is here to give us some news about Hosanna Farms.
[00:35:35] Speaker D: Yes, there is so much happening at Hosanna Farm. Obviously the biggest if you follow us on social media and have been following our journey this year, the biggest change, what was our beautiful event venue is now being converted into a childcare center. I love it.
[00:35:52] Speaker B: So needed.
[00:35:53] Speaker D: We are, are so, so excited this was a result of a really, just a need that we recognized Alexandria, the community of Alexandria, really needed.
You know, once we got meeting families and talking to people, we found out people are driving, are doing one hour round trips, morning and afternoon just to drop their children off at care and come back. So we're talking under fives, we're talking the little, little ones. And, you know, we sat back and thought, you know, we've got this big old barn, we've got this beautiful farm venue, this beautiful farm, you know, space.
Maybe we could do something to solve this problem for the community. And so away we went.
[00:36:35] Speaker B: There you go.
There. Just like the journey extraordinaire.
[00:36:41] Speaker A: Follow the yellow brick road.
[00:36:42] Speaker D: Yes, exactly. And I feel like I'm following the yellow brick road right now, but we just got into it. And I have to mention as well, like, I think sometimes businesses like this can be the most daunting to get in and start. But, you know, we have had some incredible contacts up in the state.
You know, of course, it was Suzanne who connected the dots there for us, which I was so, so grateful for. And so just being part of the chamber and being able to talk to people who were able to put me onto other people who have been able to hold our hand and have help us through this process has been absolutely invaluable. So, you know, just another benefit to being part of the chamber and why I would tell everyone, if you're a business owner, become part of the Chamber, just get, get, get involved, and you just never know where it may lead. You might end up opening a completely different business to what you started with.
[00:37:31] Speaker A: Different path than you think you.
[00:37:32] Speaker D: Yes, exactly.
[00:37:33] Speaker B: But am I right to say you announced it and then like almost overnight, you had a waiting list?
[00:37:39] Speaker D: We had.
Oh, my goodness. So we will. We are expecting to be able to be zoned for about 49 children. That is what the state's indicating to me now. So we're looking to open this fall, which has now technically started. So it kind of makes me a little nervous, but it's okay. It's coming, guys.
[00:37:56] Speaker B: It's coming.
[00:37:56] Speaker D: The construction's happening.
But they're indicating to me we should be able to open with about 49 people. I think we had like 120 expressions of interest, like straight off the bat.
[00:38:06] Speaker B: Within the first two hours.
[00:38:08] Speaker D: I know. I was like, whoa, okay, there are lots of children out there that need.
So we do have applications for enrollment open now. What that is, is a application. You can go on our website and fill that out if you Were like, yes, when you open, I want my kid in there. Fill out that application. Get in now. Because those people that fill out that application, we've already got quite a lot. To be honest.
Those people will be the first ones that we tour through our property, like through the, through the property when, when it's ready. So it should be ready within a matter of, you know, weeks to a month ready for tours and so they will be the first ones to come through then obviously if we have spaces after that we'll be putting it out to the public.
[00:38:53] Speaker B: Oh my gosh, it's just so exciting. I'm so proud for what you're doing up there.
[00:38:58] Speaker D: Yeah, we're very, very excited. So yeah, jump on our website hosannafarmchildcare.com you can put your expression of interest now. I actually I had to write down our phone number because you know, I'll give another plug too. Thanks to DTC for setting up our phone lines this week. But I don't know our phone number but our phone number is 615-529-2401.
I'll be on the end of that and I'll take your call and happy to answer any question you have. But if you've got littleies that are needing care, we're gonna do call phone full time and part time care options for you. So you know, if you're a working family like many of us are and need care for your little ones, we would absolutely love to take them. It is going to be nature based, Christ centered care. So it's going to be a great environment for you kids to grow up in. And if you don't mind your kids coming home with dirty feet, hey, that's going to be us.
Fun on the farm.
Thank you guys.
[00:39:53] Speaker B: Thanks for being here. Absolutely. Thanks for having me.
[00:39:55] Speaker A: Have a great day, hon.
All right.
[00:39:57] Speaker B: What's happening at the, at the library?
[00:39:59] Speaker A: Well, we're kind of slowed down. We're getting ready to start a lot of things that we had our first.
[00:40:02] Speaker B: Story time slowed down, believe it.
[00:40:06] Speaker A: And of course this month we're going to be doing the health fair and we're going to be doing the open house at the Head Start. And then we also have another story time on October 31st on Halloween we're going to have an that's story time at 10 o'. Clock.
So that's kind of what's going on. Of course, you know, the library is open five days a week, six days a week at our library and four days a week in Alexandria. You know, we have copies, faxes, prints, books, magazines, movies, notary notaries. Yes, everything like that. So we're a one stop shopper.
So come by the library. We have a wonderful staff. They make me look good.
[00:40:47] Speaker B: They are good. You are good.
[00:40:49] Speaker A: And they're there to help people on the Reads program, you know that we have that, the Reads program. If you have a library cards, you can download free audiobooks and ebooks. I do the Imagination library database. So any child that changes address, please come by and let me know the address change so those children can receive their books. We want them to get their books in the mail. So that's what's going on. And then a lot of other things going on in the community. Off the Beaten Path studio tour coming up.
[00:41:13] Speaker B: It's always the last weekend of October, October. And this year that's Friday the 24th, Sunday the 26th.
[00:41:22] Speaker A: So artists off the beaten path in DeKalb county and Cannon counties open their studios for a free three day open studio event. You get to see them work, you get to see their studios. Where they work. Is celebrating its 26th year. You believe in that?
[00:41:35] Speaker B: Oh, my goodness. That's amazing.
[00:41:37] Speaker A: It includes more than 25 participating artists. Artists will be demonstrating their craft and offering handcrafted shopping opportunities at every tour. So Christmas shopping, there you go. For more info, check out offthebeatenpathtour.com I had to look at that. Let's all get in there.
[00:41:54] Speaker B: And a big shout out to the folks who put that on.
It is amazing.
The work that our craftsmen and artists are doing in DeKalb county and Cannon county in this little patch of heaven of our area has so many beautiful things.
[00:42:16] Speaker A: And they're always willing to, you know, they do the backpack thing, I think. I don't know when that's coming up. It usually is in October. The backpack where they have the, you know, they set up at the farmer's market and they sell, you know, pottery and things like that. And it goes toward the backpack thing. But I haven't heard anything about that. So I don't know what's going on there.
[00:42:33] Speaker B: Right. Maybe also Saturday, October 25th from 5 to 7pm is fright in the fairgrounds in Alexandria. And it is trick or treating, food trucks, petting zoo, face painting and more. Because the holiday, the Halloween is actually a weekend holiday this year. They're, they're doing it the Friday before always.
I mean just a smash out event. So we, we really encourage anyone if, if you're looking for, for something with the little ones that's 5 to 7pm on that Friday, the Saturday before Halloween.
[00:43:13] Speaker A: Yeah. And then on Halloween, the Smithful Boo bash.
Get ready for a frightened frightfully. Say that ten times real fast. Fun time.
[00:43:23] Speaker B: You got to do that one.
[00:43:24] Speaker A: I can't, I can't. I know.
Friday, October 31st is from 2 to 5 this time. So if you're looking most all the businesses downtown, the courthouse that have it usually have a pumpkin on their door.
City Hall, City hall, also the county complex, the offices over there, the chamber and the Cap parench coalition, all those, you go over there too because they'll have candy and things for you over there. And let's see, businesses. For participating businesses and offices, the Chamber will be sponsoring the best costume and best decorations contest. So put your thinking cap on. What are you going to do? I don't know what we're doing this year. To enter it's as easy as snap in a photo, take a picture of your costume or your spooky business decorations with your phone and send it to 615-464-7760. By 2pm on Friday, October 31st. The winners will receive well deserved local and social media recognition, be announced on the November Chamber chat program and of course earn the most coveted prize of all bragging rights. There you go.
Get creative, have fun and show Smithle your Halloween flair. Thanks to the, this city mayor and the City hall and also the Smithfield Police Department because they, they really coordinate. They coordinate. Put this on Beth over there and.
[00:44:35] Speaker B: All those and and I just want to say it really is fun.
It's, it's safe. The, the streets are in the area just blocked off so it's just foot traffic only and it's a great way to pick your kids up from school and then have a way to be able to support the downtown. Have a lot of fun. Just in case you didn't have enough.
[00:45:03] Speaker A: Candy, the dentists are going to be happy. Make your appointment early because it takes a while to get in and the library will be set up. We usually if the weather's not, we'll be set up outside on the but we had about between 800 and 1,000 people come by last year. So that's a lot of candy.
[00:45:19] Speaker B: But we also really encourage businesses and places of work that if you know, participate with us, all you have to do is have your, your costumes take up, have somebody snap a picture and you'll be in the contest. And it's just really a lot of fun.
[00:45:40] Speaker A: It's fun sighting for the fans and I mentioned this. It's not on here, but the 20th annual DOTs Storytelling Day is storytelling time in DeKalb County. It's the 20th annual DOT Storytelling Day to benefit the Imagination Library.
DOT storytelling is sponsored by the Smithfield Study Club. This year's theme is DeKalb Folklore and Mysteries. And the event will be held on October 18th from 1pm to 3pm at Cheryl's Bo Bees Restaurant on West Walnut street, downtown Smithfield.
For more information, contact Susan Hinton at 615-597-9300. Our email at hintontccom.net and it was. Titsworth was a wonderful storyteller.
[00:46:21] Speaker B: Right.
[00:46:22] Speaker A: Doc could tell some stories. Let me tell you.
[00:46:24] Speaker B: Was one of the first corn that one 20 years.
What a fantastic ebay.
And even if you don't have a story to tell, it's a fantastic.
[00:46:35] Speaker D: I love it.
[00:46:36] Speaker A: Come and listen.
[00:46:36] Speaker B: I don't come and listen.
You're sure to hear something you haven't heard before.
[00:46:41] Speaker A: There's some good stories and some tall tales. There you go.
[00:46:42] Speaker B: Yeah, we're not saying all of them are true.
I don't know.
[00:46:47] Speaker C: I don't know.
[00:46:48] Speaker B: That's the. That's the joy of a mystery too.
[00:46:50] Speaker A: Is, you know, lots of good storytellers can't.
[00:46:53] Speaker B: Can't really refute the details if you don't really know them. The mysteries about.
And speaking of storytelling and mystery, the canoe. The Caney is having their annual haunted canoe trip trip which is great fun.
This is a unique opportunity to experience a spiny, tingly journey through the haunted waters as never before. Sounds scary. They promise a hair raising and unforgettable experience that will leave you with memories to last a lifetime. So haunted canoe trips are Friday and Saturday nights, September 26th through November 11th 7th. The times are 6pm or 8pm and the location is 17055 Smithville Hwy, Silver Point.
You. You do have to buy a ticket.
Your tickets include all the necessary equipment in order to do the canoe trip. Guides will ensure your safety. So this is a really great fun event for families for anyone to come on out and just let us know.
Yeah. Contact the chamber office if you need that number. We don't.
[00:48:11] Speaker A: I don't like to be number.
[00:48:12] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:48:12] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:48:13] Speaker B: If you. If you. If you like the hair resin.
[00:48:15] Speaker A: You like your hair to turn white.
[00:48:16] Speaker B: That's right.
[00:48:17] Speaker A: There you go.
And one of our favorite park managers is here. Brad.
[00:48:21] Speaker B: Half our favorite. Our favorite.
[00:48:24] Speaker A: He said only one. There you go.
[00:48:27] Speaker B: Morning, Brad.
[00:48:28] Speaker F: Sorry, I was, you know, I want to do a shout to the Nye State trooper that, you know, I was coming in. I wasn't in my normal attire. You know, I was not in my patrol vehicle talking about some worse stuff. And I had my phone up. Don't drive with your phone up to your ear because.
[00:48:46] Speaker B: Oh, that's right.
[00:48:47] Speaker A: You never know who's watching.
[00:48:48] Speaker B: That is against state law.
[00:48:49] Speaker F: It is. It is. My Bluetooth thing was not working good in my car, and so I usually have it on speaker. And I was talking and I wasn't thinking, and as soon as I turned on the road, he got me. But he.
[00:49:01] Speaker B: Well, he's just doing his job.
[00:49:03] Speaker F: Doing his job, and I appreciate. I told him how much I appreciated him. And so now I'm here.
[00:49:10] Speaker A: Well, what's going on?
[00:49:11] Speaker B: We part. Besides, we can all come together.
[00:49:14] Speaker F: Sometimes even the law enforcement needs the law enforcement to check.
[00:49:21] Speaker B: But you've got some great things. Things going on at Edgar Evan State Park.
[00:49:24] Speaker F: We do. It's about to come up to be a beautiful season. October is.
October is a very busy month for us.
[00:49:31] Speaker B: Before you get into it, tell us, are the leaves gonna be pretty this year?
[00:49:35] Speaker F: I think they are. I think they're gonna be pretty.
We're starting to see some color change. You know, if we get. I think that rain we had kind of really helped us. So, I mean, I think we're gonna have color on into November.
[00:49:47] Speaker B: Great.
[00:49:48] Speaker F: So, yeah, we got a lot going on at the park.
You know, we got our. We've not had a restroom in our office for most of the summer just for plumbing issues. So we're getting that took and taken care of. Hopefully by the first of the year, we'll have new, you know, not completely remodeled, but remodeled in the right way where everything is working.
[00:50:07] Speaker B: Where you can flush.
[00:50:08] Speaker F: Exactly, exactly.
[00:50:09] Speaker A: That's always good.
[00:50:10] Speaker F: I appreciate everybody bearing with us through this time.
So it's been.
It's been a fiasco with.
[00:50:17] Speaker B: It's been kind of poopy.
[00:50:18] Speaker F: Yes, yes.
We're getting there. We're getting there, and it's working out better. But, you know, we got our Halloween event in the campground. I think that's October 25th. You know, campers, if you're coming out, you know, decorate. We do a. You know, we try to do a. I don't know if we're actually doing a campsite decorating contest or not, but some people go all out.
But kids will be coming around trunk or treating there in the campground. So bring candy. The park will have candy. The friends group will have candy, too.
Just sometimes it's fun. Sometimes we'll get 10 or 12 sites decorate. Sometimes we'll have 40 sites decorate. So it just, you know, it's all. But if you, if you're camping that weekend, we've got a spot. And Justin does a great job. He sends stuff out periodically through the year to remind them, hey, if you're camping here this weekend, this is what's going on. And so the friends group will be down there with that as well. Also, you know, the. I think the.
On the 1st of November right now slated for our chili Chili cook off. So we're taking, we're taking teams. I think they're trying to get teams through the middle of October maybe to see how many we can get. But you can call the park, look up the friends website. There's information on how to become a team right there. So we're hoping to get some, some enough teams where we can actually have a competition.
We've got some pretty special judges set aside to judge. So I'm hoping we get some, some community support with that. It's something new. We're trying, you know, the history Hayride. We're still. We were gonna, we're gonna try to do something on that on that November 1st day. Working with a local drama club and we're trying to get. Get some, some volunteers to help us with that.
[00:52:03] Speaker B: Some characters.
[00:52:04] Speaker F: Some characters. So depending on how this goes the next few weeks, we might be tabling that till next time to do a little bit. We're wanting to change up some of the way we do the hayride, but we are changing. I know we got the new historical group here, so we're gonna be getting in with them soon to plan for the future with that. So got a lot going on.
Again, the cabins are open. You know, check our website out. I'm sure state we always do some kind of fall special. And then also they promote stuff for winter specials.
[00:52:36] Speaker B: Hiking is fabulous.
[00:52:39] Speaker F: Tennessee residents and you know, Tennessee residents get a discount just for staying in the park in the cabin. So they're, it's. They do get a Tennessee, you know, resident discount. So that's, that's something to keep in mind. You know, fall breaks coming up. So, you know, we're going to be.
Also we got at the end of the month we have our WMA managed hunt in the safety zone. So what we do, we open up areas of the park that's not normally open for hunting. So this hunt is totally on the safety. The safety's in the safety zone. So the wma, you know, it's open for hunting all the time, you know, during hunting season. But this particular hunt, it's a bow hunt, we got 100 participants.
Of those, depending out how many come, you know, we generally have around 50, you know, 40 to 50 hunters hunt this every other year.
And you have to have a, you have to harvest a doe first and then your second one can be a buck. And all these are bonus deer. It don't count off your normal thing. But we, but we will have. If you're going to be visiting the park, it's I think the 29th and 30th October, or the 28th and 29th, those two days a two day long event. So they will be hunters.
You will see hunters in some areas that you normally wouldn't see them, but everything's okay.
They're there helping us control our population.
[00:54:00] Speaker B: And most of the hunting, to be totally honest, is they get out before daylight, they're up early.
[00:54:09] Speaker F: Every now and then we have somebody say, hey, I saw a hunt. I was on, I hiked this trail, I saw a hunter, you know, do I need to be concerned? And then, you know, during one of our trails does go on our wma and so if it's during hunting season and you feel uncomfortable hiking, we do have the blaze orange vest.
[00:54:26] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:54:26] Speaker F: In our office that you can, you can come get, grab one, put it on. And when you get done, if the office is closed, just throw it in our mailbox. We'll pick it up later.
[00:54:34] Speaker B: And it's. And again, it's archery. It's not gonna.
[00:54:36] Speaker F: Yeah, it's archery. And then we do, we offer that during, even during the gun hunts, you know that, that during regular season because you know people, you want to be safe in the woods. And even though it is hikers, I recommend wearing the blaze orange or something brightly colored to make you stand out that you're not a deer. Don't come hiking. Don't come hiking in, you know, November. Yeah, in November. December. In like brown and white.
[00:55:01] Speaker A: Wear something very colorful, bright yellow or something.
Neon colors.
[00:55:07] Speaker B: And is it too soon to talk about the damn five miler?
[00:55:11] Speaker F: No, no. The damn five miler is set to go on.
[00:55:14] Speaker B: Do you know how much I was excited? I am.
[00:55:16] Speaker F: The damn 5 miler right now is still set.
[00:55:19] Speaker B: I would call all five milers that, but.
[00:55:22] Speaker F: Well, this is a challenging race. I mean, I've done, I've been involved with the Cummins Marathon some 5Ks around the upper Cumberland. You know, I've done the half marathon at Cummins. This race rivals to Me just, just in the terrain. It's. It heels both ways. It's just like a. It's like your grandpa telling you the story of him walking uphill to school. Both, you know, uphill both ways to school, barefooted. This is about the same way. You've got two hills and you start off. We start at the Ike park, run across the dam, run down the hill, come up our big hill there at the park entrance. You're gonna run to our park park visitor center, cut through there, turn back around, and you're going to run right back to the dam.
[00:56:02] Speaker B: So sometimes going downhill is just as challenging.
[00:56:06] Speaker A: You can get going too fast and just plunge into something.
[00:56:08] Speaker F: And if we can get.
It's still set for the 22nd, I think that's a Saturday before Thanksgiving. It's still set for that. If we can get registrants, we've got, last time I checked, we had about 30. We like to have. We want 50. We need 50 to put it on. So if we can get 50 signed up, you know, we'll definitely, it's definitely still. We're still. We're almost. We're getting about a week or so out from where we're gonna have to make the call. Either we're gonna do it or we don't have enough not to do. That's why we had to move it from May. But, you know, it's a wonderful time to get out and run and preparing yourself for the holidays.
[00:56:42] Speaker B: Right. And the proceeds, proceeds go to the.
[00:56:46] Speaker F: Friends of Edgar Evans and bring your pet. He can bring your dog. You can bring your dog and walk with you.
[00:56:52] Speaker B: You can walk, you can run, you can do whatever. So great. Anything else going on?
[00:56:56] Speaker F: I think that's about it.
[00:56:57] Speaker B: Are you doing your color tours this year?
[00:57:00] Speaker F: We'll be keep our website. Keep a check on our website. We will be offering the fall color cruises periodically throughout the some through the week, some on the weekend. Just keep a check on our website and our Facebook pages. But yes, those are. Those are very popular.
[00:57:15] Speaker B: Yeah. Very fun.
[00:57:16] Speaker A: Sounds like fun times at the park. If you.
[00:57:18] Speaker B: Great time to be outdoors, get out.
[00:57:20] Speaker A: And enjoy the beautiful weather.
[00:57:21] Speaker B: All right. And as I've already mentioned, leadership. DeKalb had an awesome start on Monday.
