[00:00:18] Speaker A: Well, good morning, everyone, and welcome to the June edition of Chamber Jack. Good morning to my co host, Jen Sherwood.
[00:00:23] Speaker B: Hey, good morning, Suzanne.
[00:00:25] Speaker A: Oh, my goodness. You know it's June because look at this. We've got so many guests. Saddle up, Saddle up. Because all are coming.
[00:00:32] Speaker B: We're on. We're out for the races.
[00:00:34] Speaker A: Oh. And then we're not here in July, so we're covering everything.
[00:00:36] Speaker B: June, July, you know, we want everyone to have a wonderful summer and start with June.
[00:00:43] Speaker A: Oh, yeah. You know, I've still got that mindset. Like, when school's out, I think I'm supposed to be off too.
[00:00:48] Speaker B: Right?
[00:00:48] Speaker A: It's just actually the opposite.
[00:00:51] Speaker B: It's like, wait, this is the busy season.
[00:00:53] Speaker A: This is busy season.
[00:00:54] Speaker B: Yeah, I know.
[00:00:55] Speaker A: I've heard.
[00:00:55] Speaker B: I've heard you say when. When someone's come up and say, hey, can you go do this or can you? Like in July?
[00:01:01] Speaker A: Yeah, after.
[00:01:02] Speaker B: After the jamboree.
[00:01:03] Speaker A: Jamboree. After a few little events. Yeah.
They're like, oh, you'll be okay. That's what they say.
[00:01:09] Speaker B: But it is the time of year. Weather's great. No wonder we have all these wonderful events.
[00:01:15] Speaker A: Well, let me tell you, I got some good news before I even start on chamber stuff.
[00:01:19] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:01:19] Speaker A: I've got some of the best news. You know, you don't get this call every day, but. But Matt Stribling called me the other day and he said, suzanne, my wife's dad actually owns Madison Flooring. I go, oh, that's awesome. Does he want to join the Chamber? He says he wants to for free, put a whole new sidewalk or whatever you call that coding stuff in the alley. John Anderson Alley for free.
I'm like, wait a minute. This does not compute. Do I have to come up with a match? Where's the match? Who do I have to get sponsored? He's like, no, he just wants to do it.
And so I'm like, oh, we're going to promote him all over the place. I'm going to try to get him here in August.
[00:02:01] Speaker B: Yes. Yeah. Great.
[00:02:03] Speaker A: Because it'll all be done by then. He's going to have this done before the jamboree.
It's going to be fabulous. Our next favorite is the new members. Oh, my goodness. I love my new members.
I want to chl. Oh, Center Hill Lake.
[00:02:16] Speaker B: As in Center Hill Lake? Yes.
[00:02:17] Speaker A: CHL Contractors.
[00:02:19] Speaker B: We may be blonde.
[00:02:20] Speaker A: Oh, my word.
There we go. I told you. You should have known better by using me as your example. You're a bad example.
So CHL Contractors is 482 West Broad street and you may the owner, Robin Driver.
[00:02:35] Speaker B: Yeah, he's been, he's been a chamber member in wearing other hats for many, many years.
[00:02:41] Speaker A: But he's joined under so many hats. Yes. Yeah, but we'll take it. Yeah, we'll take it.
[00:02:46] Speaker B: And. And we want to promote it. So whether you're looking to build new, remodel or add to your existing home, CHL contractors offer comprehensive services to meet your needs.
[00:02:59] Speaker A: They do it all.
[00:03:00] Speaker B: You. It sounds like it. And I know Robin is awesome at everything he does.
I know. And Christy. So for more information, call 615-82407 or check out their website at chlcontractors.com not
[00:03:18] Speaker A: as easy to say as you thought, huh?
[00:03:20] Speaker B: I know, cuz I keep wanting to say Center Hill Lake when I see chl, but it really is chl.
[00:03:25] Speaker A: Well, speaking of Center Hill, we have another center here and I actually have one of my new members with me this morning. Yes, Mara Miller is here this morning and she has got the cutest place for Airbnb. It's called Center Hill Cottage. And Myra, welcome this morning. Thank you.
Don't we look like sisters? We look like sisters. We're radio people. We're like two blondies here.
So, you know, I love Evansville Road. It's got some of my favorite things.
It's got our Evansville there. I used to live on Evansville. Yeah. So it's lots of good memories there. And then now you've got a place there and an Airbnb.
[00:04:02] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:04:02] Speaker C: We're so excited.
[00:04:03] Speaker A: What's the address first?
[00:04:04] Speaker C: 301 Evans Mill Road. It's on my property. I live right next door. So no loud parties or anything like that.
[00:04:12] Speaker B: You don't have to have a hand camera to know what's going on. You're right there.
[00:04:17] Speaker C: And so we're so excited. Used to it was a gymnastics studio.
A lot of people are familiar with that.
And so we've converted it into an apartment.
And it's a one bedroom. Perfect for a couple's getaway, a couple of friends getaway, a solo getaway from everybody.
It's got one and a half baths, it's got a full kitchen and it's got everything you need.
[00:04:44] Speaker A: It's so cute. I went online and saw the pictures. I cannot wait to be there for the ribbon cutting on Friday, June 5th at 11 o' clock if anybody wants to come and see it.
[00:04:53] Speaker C: Right. And I want to mention too, it's semi accessible, which I thought was important.
So if somebody's on a walker or has a rollator.
[00:05:01] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:05:02] Speaker C: The bathroom is a walk in shower and the bedroom door and the bathroom door are all ext wide.
[00:05:10] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:05:10] Speaker C: So people can get in and out easily.
[00:05:12] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:05:13] Speaker C: And yeah, I think so too. So great.
[00:05:16] Speaker B: Yeah. Well, thank you so much for joining us.
[00:05:18] Speaker A: We've got to tell us first how we. Oh, if somebody wants to rent it.
[00:05:22] Speaker C: Absolutely. You can contact me at Center Hillcottage Gmail or. Now this is long.
[00:05:29] Speaker B: So.
[00:05:29] Speaker A: Okay, I got it. Here it is.
[00:05:30] Speaker C: Myra Miller.
[00:05:33] Speaker D: Dash.
[00:05:34] Speaker C: Excuse me, dash Miller.
[00:05:36] Speaker B: Only because I'm looking on the logic.com
[00:05:39] Speaker C: but easiest thing is to call me at 615-809-8925 or I have a Facebook group, Central Central Hill Cottage. Look me up on Facebook and holler at me and I'll tell you how to rent it and everything.
[00:05:54] Speaker B: Well, I know the chamber gets questions all the time. Yes. Where can you know where can I stay when I'm here? And so that's great.
[00:06:02] Speaker C: Well, what I like to say is we're in the middle of it all. We're about a mile from town. Right. So for the jamboree and other downtown shops and things like that, we're right there. We're only about four miles from Sligo and then a couple more miles up the hill you can have your feet in the water at Raglan Bottom.
[00:06:19] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:06:19] Speaker C: So we're right in the middle of everything.
[00:06:21] Speaker A: Just look for the blue shutters.
[00:06:23] Speaker C: That's right.
[00:06:24] Speaker D: So huge.
[00:06:25] Speaker E: Thank you, Myra.
[00:06:26] Speaker C: Thank you so much for having me.
[00:06:28] Speaker A: So good for being here. Thank you.
[00:06:30] Speaker C: Good to see you too.
[00:06:31] Speaker B: And we have another.
[00:06:32] Speaker A: Oh, this is a new member. I'm so excited. They're out of Warren County.
[00:06:36] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:06:36] Speaker A: So volunteer behavioral health located at 120 omni driving, McMinnville. Now Danielle Smith. I'm gonna get her on here hopefully for August.
[00:06:44] Speaker B: She's.
[00:06:46] Speaker A: So we are going to get her because this is a great new member.
[00:06:49] Speaker B: Yep.
[00:06:50] Speaker A: Tell us about them.
[00:06:51] Speaker B: So the this group again, Adam McMinnville leading not for profit community behavioral health provider. So they provide services dealing with prevention, treatment and recovery and they have a wide variety of different services that they provide and manage as people are walking through their recovery. So individual group, a variety, variety of things that of the both if they were court mandated to participate, they, they cover that. But also for an individual that's looking for private and then confidential as well. We know that a lot of folks between Smithville and McMinnville that's, that's an easy run. And so we're so our little neighbors down there. Yeah.
[00:07:44] Speaker A: I love it.
Oh, you're gonna be excited about this one. Although neither one of us can run worth a hoot.
[00:07:52] Speaker B: We tried it once.
That we enjoyed it twice. First and last time.
[00:07:57] Speaker A: But Dr. Ellis is gonna be here. He may need to do surgery on us, you know. But the Upper Cumberland Habitat for Humanity, we're so excited.
[00:08:03] Speaker B: You can walk it.
[00:08:04] Speaker A: You can walk it.
They call it fun. I don't know what's fun about that, but. No, I do. I love to watch it.
[00:08:09] Speaker B: F you in.
[00:08:10] Speaker A: I take it back. I'm just carrying on.
But the Upper Cumberland, the Habitat for Humanity. I'm so glad for this new MER merger. Yes. And we have. We have our old folks here, which is really young folks.
You know what I mean?
[00:08:24] Speaker B: Yeah. We have the Sharon, but Sharon Evans is here who is longtime supporter and promoter of Habitat for Humanity and also this run.
And then we want to introduce Casey McCarty.
[00:08:38] Speaker F: So glad to be here.
[00:08:40] Speaker B: Director of development from the Upper Cumberland Habitat for Humanity. So it hasn't been that long ago that we made this merger between local DeKalb all volunteer to connecting in with some with. With the full staff and the full. All that support and opportunity. So tell us a little bit.
[00:09:01] Speaker F: Officially, we merged last year.
[00:09:03] Speaker B: Last year.
[00:09:04] Speaker F: Last year. But as a team, we've been working together, which just a great. Sharon is on the board. But then just the volunteers and the events. It's been just wonderful.
[00:09:14] Speaker B: Fantastic.
[00:09:15] Speaker F: We're so excited to be here and to be.
So I really want to talk about that really quick. We will be building here in the fall.
[00:09:23] Speaker A: Oh, great.
[00:09:23] Speaker F: In the fall. Like I want to repeat that. It's huge.
So just really thankful.
[00:09:30] Speaker B: So we are in Middle Tennessee. Is the fall when school starts or fall? Like keep you on your toes.
[00:09:38] Speaker F: Right. So. So everyone, you know, how can construction.
[00:09:43] Speaker B: Yeah, right, right, right.
[00:09:44] Speaker F: So in the fall. But really want to say thank you to Vic Surveying. They are going to be out surveying the property. We have three lots.
[00:09:52] Speaker E: Oh, you are.
[00:09:53] Speaker B: You're really getting.
[00:09:55] Speaker F: One lot is going to be converted to two. So really we have four buildable lots.
We have an homeowner that has already been accepted into the program and then that was selected in March. So we are super excited for the homeowner and the participant. She is going to start her sweat equity hours. So we are just ready to dive in and then just dive into the event, be a part of the chamber and really this community so much who are in the events. And speaking of events, we want to
[00:10:25] Speaker A: talk about the Fiddler, the big fundraiser. The Fiddler podcast.
[00:10:28] Speaker G: Yes.
[00:10:29] Speaker E: Since 1999, we've been doing this.
[00:10:32] Speaker H: Wow.
[00:10:33] Speaker A: So I can't believe that, can you?
I remember those.
[00:10:36] Speaker E: We have a few folks who've run all of them, which is always fun to see.
We'll see if they make it back.
[00:10:43] Speaker B: Right.
[00:10:44] Speaker E: But yes. July 4th this year, Saturday, July 4th, the 4th. The Saturday of the jamboree is the Fiddler Fund.
[00:10:51] Speaker B: And it's actually on the 4th this year. It's an early morning run.
[00:10:55] Speaker C: Right.
[00:10:55] Speaker E: It's at 7am Rain or shine.
We register at the Love Cantrell parking lot downtown. And the run starts in front of the First Baptist Church LEC at. Right at 7 o'. Clock. So you can go to fiddler5k.com to register. It's $30 to register in advance. It's 25 if you're 18 and under.
So go register.
[00:11:23] Speaker A: Is there any difference?
[00:11:23] Speaker C: Yes.
[00:11:24] Speaker E: The fun run is the same day. Yeah. It starts five minutes after the 5K. Anybody can fun run. You don't have to be a kid.
[00:11:34] Speaker B: Yeah, right.
[00:11:35] Speaker E: You can. But we give awards to our 12 and under.
[00:11:38] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:11:39] Speaker A: I think there ought to be awards for your 70 and over. I think that something we should do.
[00:11:44] Speaker B: I'll give you a I'll be live way to go.
[00:11:46] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:11:47] Speaker B: Here, pat on the back. There you go.
[00:11:50] Speaker F: And you can. You can also go to uchabitat.org and we still are accepting sponsorships. So we have a T shirt sponsor. We have a swag bag and a turn sign sponsor. So that will end on June, next week, on the 11th. I'm trying to think what month am I in?
[00:12:08] Speaker E: So if you want to sponsor it and you have not already to be on the shirts or to sponsor a turn sign and the bag, let casey
[email protected] yes. Can I tell you who our sponsors are?
[00:12:20] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:12:22] Speaker E: One of your new members, CHL Contractors. Oh, they're on the shirts and they've sponsored a sign. Express Footwear and Running Star Manufacturing, Stonehouse Winery.
They also have a sign. Wilson bank and Trust. We also have First Bank.
We have Glenda Davis, CPA. And then our bag sponsors are Bowman Properties, CHL Contractors. I said that 1. DeKalb Title, Gammon, Drewick and Watson, Michaels Homes and Wellworth Bank. So we're calling for our sponsors. Many of those are long time sponsors
[00:12:56] Speaker B: and you have people from all over that come. It's a really cool event, even if you're not participating, to come out and cheer folks on.
[00:13:05] Speaker A: About 400 people or so don't you
[00:13:07] Speaker E: get about 400 runners? It's a lot of fun. We have, you know, snacks at the end and music and adore prizes and it's a good time. So.
[00:13:16] Speaker F: And it's a great event just to make a strong impact on a family or a single individual. So it's truly creating a generation change for the trajectory of again, think about the lots that we have available and that we are building in the fall. So that's, that's huge. And then one thing I really want to stress is, yes, we have this event coming up. But if you are excited to get involved and want to be a part of a committee, we are branching out and we're. If you're interested, please reach out to me. You can email
[email protected] or go to our website. But if you're interested in serving in a different capacity for Habitat, just connect because we are looking to form an advisory committee for here in DeKalb County.
[00:14:00] Speaker B: Well, we know, we know that housing is an issue and when people bring their hands and say, what can we do?
Here you go. Habitat for Humanity has been here a very long time and done a lot of good. So thank you so much for being here.
[00:14:16] Speaker F: Thank you for having us.
[00:14:18] Speaker A: Oh, you're gonna be excited about her next.
[00:14:20] Speaker B: I'm always excited to see Susan Demay.
She is just like, you can just feel the creativity.
[00:14:29] Speaker A: I feel like I get creative when I'm around her.
[00:14:31] Speaker B: Well, I feel like she kind of drains me, like she just absorbs it all.
I'm sorry, have thought it was from the right instead of the left.
So, Susan, come came today to tell us about the DeKalb Animal Shelter event.
Tell us all about what's happening for your fundraiser. Okay.
[00:14:54] Speaker G: Well, I'm Susan May and I'm a board member of the DeKalb Animal Coalition here in Smithville and we oversee the shelter's operations. We are excited to announce our annual dog wash on Saturday, June 13th from 10am to 1pm this drive thru event will be held this year at the DeKalb Animal Clinic at 1050 W. Broad St. And will benefit the DeKalb Animal Shelter. The fee for a small dog is $10, the fee for a medium dog is $12 and the fee for large dogs is $15.
All money raised at this event will go to the DeKalb Animal Shelter.
The shelter does amazing work in caring for abused, neglected and abandoned pets in DeKalb County. The shelter is always full as animals are rotated in and out of the shelter every Animal is well taken care of until adoption by their forever family.
Foster parents to the shelter animals also play a vital role in helping these animals as they are also available for adoption. All shelter animals may be viewed online at www.pets10.com.
On this website you will be able to complete an adoption form, learn about becoming a foster parent and about other volunteer activities.
You can donate much needed supplies, see our wish list for that or give cash donation. You can even become a monthly donor and that would be awesome. We look forward to meeting all dogs and owners at this fundraising event.
[00:16:41] Speaker B: No cats?
[00:16:43] Speaker A: No.
[00:16:46] Speaker B: Just checking.
[00:16:47] Speaker A: Yeah, right.
It's fun.
[00:16:51] Speaker G: Thank you for your support.
[00:16:54] Speaker A: I didn't have that down as a question, just so you know, because I knew the answer.
[00:16:58] Speaker B: I love it. You guys are so great.
[00:17:00] Speaker A: Dog wash. So this is a great time to go out. I mean if you've been thinking about adopting a pet. Because the pet shelter is totally full right now. It only holds 25 dogs and I think about 30 or 35 cats. So they are at capacity. So if you've been looking for thinking about I just need me a little pet. This is the time.
[00:17:21] Speaker B: Right.
[00:17:22] Speaker A: Because I need to free up some space for the other.
[00:17:23] Speaker B: I want to know who. Do you know who takes the pictures or the videos? Yes.
[00:17:29] Speaker G: We have a staff at the shelter.
[00:17:31] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:17:31] Speaker G: And one of them is a very talented photographer.
[00:17:34] Speaker B: Whatever it is, they do amazing. I mean every, every dog makes you just want to.
[00:17:40] Speaker A: Oh, I wanna.
[00:17:41] Speaker B: I want that one. No, I want that one. No, I want that one.
[00:17:44] Speaker G: We also recently set up an intern program between the work based learning program at the high school.
So students thinking about veterinary care in the future can intern at the shelter and get a lot of experience.
[00:18:00] Speaker B: Oh, I'm sure they get all kinds of experience.
[00:18:03] Speaker A: So you know, in the fo Ed school they've got the. Where they're training them to do this. And the day I was there to see it, you're not gonna believe this. They were giving a bath to a cat.
[00:18:14] Speaker B: I found out I was joking. But here you go.
[00:18:17] Speaker A: It really happened. But they had it in the harness.
[00:18:19] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:18:19] Speaker A: And it was very calm actually. It was surprising. I was like, wow, that's impressive. I'm staying over here.
[00:18:28] Speaker B: So what time is the dog wash again?
[00:18:30] Speaker G: 10:00am to 1:00pm okay, good. We'll be there and setting up by 9:30.
[00:18:36] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. And people stay in their cars.
[00:18:40] Speaker G: Well, they have to get the dog
[00:18:41] Speaker B: out like as they're waiting.
[00:18:44] Speaker G: Right. There's that long driveway on the side of the clinic.
[00:18:48] Speaker A: So I guess Have a leash on the animal.
[00:18:50] Speaker B: So they'll probably come in on Broad and exit on Main Street.
[00:18:53] Speaker G: That's right.
[00:18:53] Speaker A: Okay. Oh, that's so complicated. I'm sorry.
[00:18:58] Speaker B: They're like, you're asking a lot of really dumb questions, Jen.
[00:19:03] Speaker G: Because I was getting organized on this and then it hit me. Oh, I need to figure out how they turn the water on.
[00:19:10] Speaker B: Oh yeah, like a minor detail.
[00:19:13] Speaker G: Exactly.
[00:19:14] Speaker B: Well, thank you, Susan.
[00:19:16] Speaker A: Thank you for having me.
[00:19:17] Speaker B: Good to see you.
[00:19:17] Speaker G: It's always good to see.
[00:19:18] Speaker A: Oh, see you, Susan.
[00:19:20] Speaker B: Bye.
[00:19:20] Speaker A: Oh look, you're one of my best buddies.
[00:19:22] Speaker B: I know.
[00:19:23] Speaker A: Car Whale is here from the Purple door.
[00:19:25] Speaker B: Dancing, acting. What are you doing this month, Randy?
[00:19:28] Speaker A: It depends on dancing again. Actually tell them about that real quick.
[00:19:33] Speaker D: I'm doing a. For a fun for an Alzheimer's fundraiser for a friend of mine in Murfreesboro that owns Murfreesboro Dance Studio. She does an event called the Longest Day and has a lot of exhibition. So it's for a good cause. I don't know if anybody has been touched by Alzheimer's or dementia. I had. My mother in law had it. My mother.
[00:19:50] Speaker B: Right.
[00:19:50] Speaker D: You know, if you haven't been affected by it personally. I know you know somebody that sure. So, so great. Cause I'll be. I'll be dancing again.
[00:19:57] Speaker A: He's become a dancer now.
[00:19:59] Speaker B: I knew it.
[00:20:00] Speaker A: So if you've got another dance competition
[00:20:02] Speaker D: coming up, please, please, no.
[00:20:03] Speaker A: Randy wants to keep this going.
[00:20:05] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:20:06] Speaker D: Yeah, I am continuing my dance lessons, so. So it's been a fun journey.
[00:20:11] Speaker H: Yeah.
[00:20:11] Speaker I: We could get you a plugin. Right.
[00:20:13] Speaker D: Well I can, you know, if I. Yeah, I don't know.
[00:20:19] Speaker I: Have you looked into Marianne's classes?
[00:20:23] Speaker D: I have not. I do actually have a lesson this Thursday so I'm learning the cha cha. I'm learning all the chaos.
There's six, there's six basic steps.
[00:20:34] Speaker A: You may start your own dad's class here. Oh, I can take some.
[00:20:37] Speaker D: It would be very basic.
[00:20:38] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:20:39] Speaker B: Right.
[00:20:39] Speaker D: And I hope you put something on top of your feet, you know, to camp me stepping on your toes.
[00:20:44] Speaker A: We're so proud of you, cuz that took a lot of bravery, especially in front of people.
I wouldn't do it. I'm like, I won't do it. But I can take somebody. I'm talk somebody.
[00:20:52] Speaker D: Well, WTC did reach out to me for some recommendations for next year's event.
A couple names out there. So we'll see if Alex doesn't have much rhythm. Oh no, I didn't have any either.
[00:21:04] Speaker A: That's what he said, that's what he said. And I said, we don't care.
[00:21:09] Speaker B: And now you, you've created a monster.
[00:21:12] Speaker D: Oh no. No you haven't. No, you haven'.
[00:21:15] Speaker B: Well, what's going on with Dan?
[00:21:16] Speaker D: Well, for those that say there's nothing to do in Smith, we've got plenty to do. There's no excuse to get out, particularly downtown. So we've got a number of things going on. Of course we got our shop late Friday, which is this Friday, June 5th. June 5th. And Rocky James and Button Willow is collaborating to do a family movie night there.
[00:21:38] Speaker A: And you know, Rocky James has moved down to the other side of the Jen.
[00:21:44] Speaker D: So Matt's been a great new owner.
[00:21:46] Speaker A: Real
[00:21:48] Speaker D: come back.
[00:21:49] Speaker B: I don't know if anybody. It's, it's, it's worth a visit downtown just to see the signs.
[00:21:54] Speaker D: So going to be some Games beginning at 5:30. They're going to have Jenga Uno, Connect 4, Cornhole Twister. They're trying to generate some business for the chiropractors here in town.
Sidewalk chalk and rock painting. And then their movie will start at 6 o'. Clock.
[00:22:09] Speaker A: So awesome.
[00:22:10] Speaker D: Keep your eye out. We've kind of been a little bit, you know, the shut the shop late Fridays are consistent, but we're trying to plan some activities to bring people down that is more than just shopping. So shops will be open late to help support that event. So please, you know, please come out.
If I know I will not be playing Twister, I can tell you because they will require the ambulance come and come and take care of me there.
[00:22:39] Speaker I: Sounds like a specialty call out for Ascension St. Thomas.
[00:22:42] Speaker D: Yeah, there you go.
[00:22:46] Speaker A: Transition when they get over here.
[00:22:48] Speaker B: Right here.
[00:22:49] Speaker D: Yeah. And then this Saturday from June 6th is the French Market. It's Chase Collins.
[00:22:54] Speaker F: That sounds so cool.
[00:22:55] Speaker A: I cannot wait.
[00:22:57] Speaker D: Annual fundraiser, annual French Market. The Carriage House, if you haven't seen where the Carriage house is, the little courtyard that he has there all the
[00:23:06] Speaker B: time, like, what is that? And I'm like, that's someone's residence. And yet it's so beautiful.
[00:23:12] Speaker A: Is it the building also in the back?
[00:23:13] Speaker I: Yes.
[00:23:14] Speaker D: And that's a little event center that he has. Well, a little place that you can rent out.
He has some afternoon teas there. He has some wedding things there. He has some party, private parties, birthday parties.
[00:23:25] Speaker B: They're surrounded by churches and so a lot of people are having a church event and that's kind of their overflow for.
[00:23:30] Speaker D: Yeah, so beautiful little place, you know, there. And of course the French Market's going to Be fantastic.
[00:23:36] Speaker A: Oh, Chase's Hotel.
[00:23:37] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:23:37] Speaker D: And he's got, he's got some vendors
[00:23:39] Speaker B: there's coming that are going to be unusual and unique.
[00:23:45] Speaker D: So you got something Smith will do Friday night. Dickhead gang got something to do Friday night. You got something to do Saturday.
[00:23:50] Speaker B: Oh my goodness.
[00:23:51] Speaker D: And then June and I just want
[00:23:53] Speaker B: to shout out Saturday, June 6th is from 10 to 6pm From 10 to
[00:23:58] Speaker D: 6pm so all day, all day, all day event. Yep. And then Saturday, June 20, downtown there's going to be chrome on the square. So it's going to be.
[00:24:06] Speaker A: Oh, that sounds like some horror stuff.
[00:24:10] Speaker D: Classic cars, music, fun food trucks. Again, another, another Saturday event that you know, we hope to, to bring people downtown and if you haven't discovered downtown, you discover.
[00:24:21] Speaker B: Oh my gosh. And every time I come there's something else and people are, the retailers are doing a great job of keeping.
Keeping the interest up. Every time I come, Cheryl's Bo Bees has fantastic decorations in the windows. You know, I mean like it's just
[00:24:36] Speaker A: a fun place sometimes music going in there.
[00:24:38] Speaker B: Oh my gosh. It's great. Everything everyone's.
[00:24:41] Speaker A: And the downtown start looks, I mean it always was beautiful but it's getting, you know, everybody's doing their stuff and it's. The buildings are becoming so beautiful. We're just appreciate. Oh, you've got a new sign up yourself, don't you? Some new, more new stuff. We're just so excited.
[00:24:55] Speaker D: Window, new window, new painted door.
[00:24:57] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:24:58] Speaker D: And then just one other event that I need to mention. Rocky James on June 13th is doing a plant and pause event at 1 o'.
[00:25:07] Speaker A: Clock.
[00:25:07] Speaker D: So what they're going to have, they're going to have a pet themed ceramic planter that you're going to be able to paint and that's going to come with a pet friendly plant as well. So you can sign up for tickets by this Friday. It's going to be at one o' clock again on the 13th.
[00:25:25] Speaker A: They're so creative. Goodness gracious.
[00:25:27] Speaker B: Yeah, they're not exactly in downtown but Ace Hardware asked me to.
[00:25:33] Speaker A: Yes, whatever. We love Ace.
[00:25:35] Speaker B: They're doing a weekly Father's day events. They just had a guess how many nails are in a jar and they're my neighbor.
[00:25:45] Speaker A: I can go over there and guess the nails.
[00:25:46] Speaker B: Yeah. Oh well I think that's done. But it was over 1600. It was crazy.
But that's also kind of the hub for farmers market which is ramping up and so if anybody's looking for a booth they just go into Ace Hardware. To. To be able to schedule or arrange for their booth.
[00:26:06] Speaker A: I did not know that. Yeah. Embarrassing.
[00:26:08] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, yeah. So.
So this is the time when people are starting to bring. Bring their summer garden items out. And so we want everyone to just be out and about.
Take advantage of these fantastic events that are going.
[00:26:25] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:26:25] Speaker B: So support local.
[00:26:26] Speaker A: Since you brought up farmer's Market.
[00:26:28] Speaker F: Yes.
[00:26:28] Speaker A: I've grown my first squash. I've got.
[00:26:30] Speaker B: Oh, I've got a. I'm like.
[00:26:32] Speaker A: I'm like a gardener now. I've got herbs. I don't know. I can grow flowers. I don't know what happened.
[00:26:37] Speaker B: I couldn't grow anything. White squash.
[00:26:39] Speaker C: No.
[00:26:39] Speaker A: I've got like a counter full.
[00:26:41] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:26:41] Speaker A: I've got pictures.
I'm just so excited. I've never.
[00:26:45] Speaker B: I'm so proud of you.
[00:26:47] Speaker A: You know, I did not have a green thumb and nail. I don't know what's happened. They're solid green. Green. Growing everything.
Now if the tomatoes actually turn red, that's going to be the. We'll talk about that in August. But I've never been able to grow anything. And then last year for Mother's Day, Beth, my daughter, showed up, had a little surprise garden for me. A little square foot garden.
[00:27:06] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:27:07] Speaker A: Stuff grew. And so.
[00:27:09] Speaker B: Well, that's how it works.
[00:27:10] Speaker A: I decided to do it.
[00:27:11] Speaker B: Beth is the one with the green thumb.
[00:27:13] Speaker A: Well, no, all her stuff is gone. And then I put my new stuff out.
[00:27:17] Speaker B: Huh.
[00:27:17] Speaker A: It grew.
[00:27:18] Speaker B: Yeah. You. You think her charm has left, but
[00:27:21] Speaker A: I don't know what happened, but she may be sneaking over there at night and doing stuff.
[00:27:26] Speaker B: Well, Beth is awesome at everything she does. It doesn't surprise me at all that you have vegetables. Good for you.
[00:27:32] Speaker A: Not like you, but you know. I know you're a crazy girl. But anyway, I'm so proud of this squash. So now we're going to see if the cucumber and the tomatoes come in. I don't know. We'll see. All right.
[00:27:41] Speaker D: Speaking of farmer's market, one of our things we do want to do is for our shop late Fridays is do a farmer's market one night, probably in August Sept. We'll probably be trying to hit like downtown.
[00:27:51] Speaker A: You really want something?
[00:27:52] Speaker B: Yeah, to have people.
[00:27:53] Speaker A: I might bring some squash.
[00:27:54] Speaker D: There you go.
[00:27:55] Speaker A: I've got lots of squash.
[00:27:56] Speaker D: Yeah.
[00:27:57] Speaker A: Okay. Look for.
[00:27:58] Speaker B: And it matches my hair. It's the exact same color.
[00:28:01] Speaker A: That's the reason I love this squash. It's the same color, you know.
[00:28:03] Speaker B: Is it a scallop squash or is it long and skinny? What kind of Squash.
[00:28:08] Speaker A: I don't know. You better draw a picture.
I'll give you. I'll send you a picture. I don't know what it's called.
[00:28:13] Speaker F: Leave it.
[00:28:13] Speaker A: When I said I didn't know you was going to ask me a hard question.
[00:28:15] Speaker B: I'm making stuff up.
[00:28:16] Speaker A: Okay, I am not making stuff up. But anyway, I'm going to put it on my Facebook page.
[00:28:20] Speaker B: All right.
[00:28:21] Speaker A: Us. Randy's like, can I go?
[00:28:23] Speaker B: Can I go?
[00:28:24] Speaker A: He's leaving now.
[00:28:25] Speaker D: Well, I'm waiting for my cue.
[00:28:26] Speaker A: Okay, well, okay.
Get that clogging class going.
Well, let's see here. Okay, we're gonna get Dr. Ellis over here and I.
[00:28:41] Speaker B: While you guys are getting settled, we're gonna talk about this Smithville.
[00:28:45] Speaker A: Well, I get you.
[00:28:47] Speaker B: Center Craft Festival.
Alex Woodward is here to tell us all about all the fun things happening.
[00:28:53] Speaker I: Yeah, we've got a lot going on with jamboree.
We are within one month.
[00:28:58] Speaker A: That's hard to believe.
[00:29:00] Speaker I: One month from today.
[00:29:01] Speaker B: He kind of twitched a little. I don't know if you saw that, whether you can see that on the radio, but he's like, oh, a month.
[00:29:08] Speaker A: Didn't realize he was that close.
[00:29:11] Speaker I: But yeah. So exciting time.
Smithville always rallies around the jamboree. It's our 55th annual.
Started back in 1972. And so we will be kicking that off on Thursday, July 2, at the Evans Park.
[00:29:26] Speaker A: Oh, it's gonna be a big night.
[00:29:27] Speaker H: It will be.
[00:29:28] Speaker I: It's exciting.
[00:29:28] Speaker A: Okay, so, Alex, this is gonna be the only performance by the community choir. So we gotta be there that night.
[00:29:34] Speaker I: Correct. And so the chorus will be performing on Thursday night this year. And then we will have Marianne Bucket. Her square dance teams will dance.
[00:29:43] Speaker A: And then she's got like eight teams now.
[00:29:45] Speaker B: Oh, my gosh. And if you. You cannot sit and watch that without smiling. All these kids are so full of energy and so talented.
[00:29:53] Speaker I: They are. And it's hard to sit there and
[00:29:55] Speaker A: not clap and tap each other. I love it.
[00:29:58] Speaker I: Holler at them in a good way.
[00:29:59] Speaker A: Yeah, but.
[00:30:01] Speaker I: And hopefully we will have a little bluegrass music after the dancers. So we'll see. See, I think we have the national anthem lined up for it to be played on a banjo this year. Oh, that'll be very neat.
[00:30:16] Speaker H: Yeah.
[00:30:18] Speaker I: We start at 6pm on Thursday, July 2, at Evans park, just right next to the post office and the city fire hall.
And then we kick off our competition on Friday, July 3rd, and we're moving it up to 8. 30.
[00:30:34] Speaker H: 30.
[00:30:35] Speaker I: So we did last year. We finished both Friday and Saturday night. About one o' clock in the morning
[00:30:41] Speaker B: and everyone's like, okay.
[00:30:42] Speaker I: And it's, it's fun. But that's a little bit late.
We've moved up to 8:30. Hopefully we can finish at more appropriate time.
But we're starting.
[00:30:53] Speaker B: Plus it can be hot.
Take advantage of those early, early hours.
[00:30:58] Speaker I: Usually there's rain in the forecast somewhere. Yeah, it may not hit us. Last year was perfect tested and we didn't have any rain last year. Yeah, we didn't have any delays. So going to 1 o' clock was, was awesome because that means we had a lot of contestants.
[00:31:11] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:31:12] Speaker I: So we're moving that up to 8:30 this year on both Friday and Saturday.
And we will be kicking off our competition on Friday.
We have our four new categories from last year, some new dance categories. On Saturday night at 5pm we have Dan Tomine come into play for us.
He is the recipient of this year's Blue Blaze Award.
[00:31:36] Speaker A: Oh, so he's gotta get a famous song.
[00:31:38] Speaker I: Doesn't he has a famous song? If you've seen the movie oh Brother,
[00:31:42] Speaker A: where Arthur, have I seen that movie,
[00:31:44] Speaker I: man of Constant Sorrow on that.
He played George Clooney in a movie as well.
And he also has a popular song
[00:31:52] Speaker A: called hey Brother, does he look like George Clooney? Because we're going to fill up the jamboree this year.
[00:31:56] Speaker I: I'm going to say you need to come and see.
That's the best way I can answer.
[00:32:02] Speaker B: Excellent, Excellent answer.
[00:32:03] Speaker I: We have some other opportunities for some of our winners to be able to go and play at the Grand Ole Opry this year. So I won't spill all.
[00:32:17] Speaker A: Oh, we're not gonna spill all the beans. Okay.
[00:32:19] Speaker I: But we, we do have some great partnership from the Grand Ole Opry.
[00:32:23] Speaker A: I love that partnership, don't you?
[00:32:25] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:32:25] Speaker A: Exciting.
[00:32:26] Speaker I: Oh my gosh. Some of these people, that's their first opportunity to play on the Grand Ole Opry. And some of them have been dancers that don't get to play fiddle on the Grand Ole Opry and others who have been there at different times but not had the spotlight on them. So it's, it's very neat to have that. And we've just got a lot going on.
[00:32:48] Speaker B: Sounds very exciting.
[00:32:51] Speaker I: Food boosts.
So make sure you come.
[00:32:54] Speaker B: So tell someone. How do you describe it to someone who's never been. So maybe somebody who's new to the area hours just going to be here for the weekend.
[00:33:02] Speaker I: So we have competition on, on the main stage on the east side of the square, which locals always enjoy seeing. The stage go start to go up.
[00:33:10] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:33:11] Speaker I: We have competition that starts from 8:30 and it goes to wherever we get done. And what types of system.
[00:33:17] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:33:18] Speaker I: What types of bluegrass music?
Banjo, fiddle, flat top.
[00:33:22] Speaker B: Good.
[00:33:23] Speaker I: Square dancing, clogging.
[00:33:25] Speaker A: Oh, Appalachian style.
[00:33:26] Speaker I: Anything duo. Yes, duo clogging. All kinds of different things.
[00:33:30] Speaker A: So fun.
[00:33:31] Speaker I: Additionally, we have a lot of Appalachian crafts and then food boosts. So they open up. All of them open up at 8:30 and then most of them stay open till we close.
[00:33:43] Speaker A: And Alex, if somebody's not able to actually be there in person, DTC will have it filming, Right?
[00:33:48] Speaker I: Dtc longtime partner, the jamboree. They will, of course. They're celebrating their 75th anniversary.
[00:33:55] Speaker A: I know. I'm so excited. Excited.
[00:33:57] Speaker I: They will have it playing on DTC3TV as well as YouTube. And it's streamed from start to finish with DTC all weekend long. So it's exciting time in Smithville if you haven't been before. We have boosts all around the square.
[00:34:15] Speaker G: Yeah.
[00:34:15] Speaker I: And then all around 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 different side streets of just crap boost lines.
[00:34:22] Speaker B: It's just the place to be. And even if you're just coming for just a little bit or you want to pull up a.
And stay for the whole duration, you're gonna have a great time.
[00:34:32] Speaker I: On Saturday, we have our national championship of country musician beginners, which is a mouthful, but we have seven categories where kids 12 and under compete in clogging, buck dancing, flat top guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, and one other thing.
[00:34:51] Speaker A: One other thing.
[00:34:52] Speaker I: One other thing.
What?
[00:34:55] Speaker A: That is something.
[00:34:57] Speaker I: Isaac was here last year and it was his first year.
[00:35:00] Speaker A: Oh, Isaac Heller. Isaac Heller with the hospital.
[00:35:04] Speaker I: You know, he got his first taste of jamboree last year. So what'd you think about it?
[00:35:09] Speaker J: Oh, it was a ton of fun. It was a ton of fun. I'll be there again this year.
[00:35:12] Speaker I: Good, good. It's. It's exciting and. And to see people come out and supporting the crafters, the food booths, the musicians, the dancers.
It's fun. Time to have that. We have people come from all over to enjoy it. We have people watch from all over.
DTC is able to track some of the people who watch.
We had over 40 states last year, over 10 different countries where it was watched. So it's very cool.
[00:35:44] Speaker A: Kind of a big deal.
[00:35:45] Speaker B: Yeah. And it's no better way to celebrate our country's 250th than to celebrate. Yeah. It's going to be a big year and a great weekend to be here in Smithville.
[00:35:56] Speaker A: And you try to get rested up before this because you got some long days ahead.
[00:35:59] Speaker I: I do, I do. We, we are the official jamboree and crafts festival of the state of Tennessee. Y and so big opportunity for us to showcase.
[00:36:10] Speaker B: Those are some big clogging shoes you guys got on.
[00:36:14] Speaker A: Thank you so much.
[00:36:16] Speaker I: Thank you for having us on and look forward to seeing you at the jamboree.
[00:36:19] Speaker A: We will be there.
Oh, so we may need. We're really glad the hospital's close by.
[00:36:24] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:36:25] Speaker A: You know, all the heat and all the running around, everything. I'll tell you, we are so blessed
[00:36:29] Speaker B: that ER comes in handy on events like this.
[00:36:33] Speaker A: From Ascension St. Thomas DeKalb Hospital, Isaac Heller, our hospital administrator, and Dr. Adam Ellis is here. Welcome back to both of you.
[00:36:44] Speaker K: Thank you, Suzanne. Thank you, Jen.
[00:36:46] Speaker A: So how are you?
[00:36:48] Speaker K: Well, I, I, I thought I would start with a little funny anecdote.
[00:36:52] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:36:52] Speaker K: Go to the anecdote brought on by the animal shelter and you'll be the
[00:36:57] Speaker B: judge of whether it's funny.
[00:36:58] Speaker A: No, she laughs at everything, so you
[00:37:01] Speaker K: can't take care of it involves me, so of course it's funny.
So, you know, I called my wife up, this was long time ago. I called her up and I said, this cat has been on our back porch about three days in a row now.
And he's real cute, he's real friendly, but I just don't know what to do. And she said, you didn't feed him, did you?
And I said, yeah, I gave him some chicken. She said, congratulations, you now have a cat.
[00:37:32] Speaker A: The father of a cat.
[00:37:33] Speaker K: And I didn't know that was how it worked. I'd never had a cat before, so that's how it works.
And I have been washing that cat once a month for the last 10 years.
[00:37:43] Speaker B: Wow.
[00:37:44] Speaker K: So you're looking at a professional coming.
Professional catwalk.
[00:37:48] Speaker A: They're going to be calling you to volunteer your time at the animal.
[00:37:52] Speaker B: Yeah, that's right.
[00:37:52] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:37:53] Speaker K: And almost as fun as washing cats is getting a colonoscopy.
[00:37:58] Speaker B: That's a great.
[00:38:00] Speaker A: You know, now I'm a fan of a good colonoscopy. I mean, they gave me a private room.
[00:38:06] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:38:06] Speaker A: I mean, I was sound asleep. It was awesome. I was best sleep of my life.
[00:38:10] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:38:11] Speaker A: So, yeah, I'm a fan.
[00:38:13] Speaker K: Well, you know, I've, I've had mine like I'm supposed to.
[00:38:16] Speaker B: No, no, I'm gonna say I was so upset.
[00:38:18] Speaker A: I mean, I'm like, It's like every 10 years and I'm like, why are you kept talking about Dr. Jack? Surely I can have one before. Then he goes, no, Suzanne, you gotta wait.
[00:38:26] Speaker E: I got.
[00:38:26] Speaker A: I got like another eight years to wait or something.
[00:38:28] Speaker B: Nice.
[00:38:29] Speaker A: Yeah, I'm sorry.
[00:38:30] Speaker B: Most people don't feel that way, but that's great.
Tell us what else is going on at the hospital.
[00:38:35] Speaker A: I'm your poster child for a colonoscopy.
[00:38:38] Speaker F: I'm following.
[00:38:39] Speaker K: Well, I mean, actually, the colonoscopy issue is one of the main things we wanted to talk about. So, you know, as we all know, it's an important thing to get done.
[00:38:51] Speaker B: Colon cancer is real.
[00:38:52] Speaker K: Colon cancer is real. It's about 250,000 cases in this country alone every year.
And most of those people had no family history.
They felt fine. They didn't know anything was going on. So it's actually something that can be going on that you have no idea. So these screenings are extremely important.
A few years ago, they actually changed the rules. Instead of starting at age 50, it's age 45 now.
[00:39:20] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:39:21] Speaker K: So just like that, you're out of date.
[00:39:24] Speaker B: But just that just shows evidence, shows that if you catch it early, it much, much better. Better outcome.
[00:39:31] Speaker K: Oh, absolutely, absolutely. So, I mean, it fits. It perfectly fits the description of something that should get a screening program.
It's identifiable, it's common, it happens a lot. And if we find it, we can
[00:39:44] Speaker H: do something about it.
[00:39:46] Speaker A: It is not that bad. I mean, it gets a bad rap.
[00:39:48] Speaker K: I've had. I've had mine. And you're right about the propofol.
[00:39:51] Speaker A: Oh, my word. I'm like, where do I get this right?
[00:39:56] Speaker B: Best night of sleep I've had.
[00:39:59] Speaker A: Why did y' all wake me up? This is awesome.
[00:40:02] Speaker K: But, you know, one. So I always joke with my patients, if there's anybody out there listening, that. That has been my patient, you know, that I have my lines that I say. And one of them is there's no way to make it fun. But we try to make it reasonable.
[00:40:17] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah.
[00:40:18] Speaker K: And that's part and parcel of, you know, because compliance. Compliance rates are actually quite low.
A lot more people should be getting them than actually are. So we try to make it reasonable so people will come back. And along those lines, we've introduced a new service line, if you want to call it that, within the sort of the colonoscopy space. And that is fast track colonoscopies.
So, you know, a lot of times, especially people who work, they have issues with, you know, taking a day off to come in and see me.
You know, sort of the whole.
That being kind of cumbersome. So Basically, the had a few barriers
[00:41:03] Speaker B: there that you've now been able to lift.
[00:41:04] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:41:05] Speaker K: And the idea is if you are, you know, in reasonably good health and, you know, you're not on, you know, 20 medications, you know, kind of, you know, on that side of the spectrum, then we have a process by which you can get approved for a fast track colonoscopy where you don't have to take a day off of work or a day off of whatever you're doing to come see me first. And we can actually meet the day of the scope and we streamline the process.
[00:41:34] Speaker A: Oh, that's awesome. Yeah. I went early that morning and was back at work.
[00:41:37] Speaker B: Right. Yeah. No, it's like, Suzanne, my husband and I didn't weather.
[00:41:41] Speaker A: So it's like it was a date. Yeah, it was.
[00:41:45] Speaker K: Okay then. That's something I've never heard before.
[00:41:48] Speaker B: Well, you, Richard, we get together.
[00:41:52] Speaker A: We get together when we can. I don't get home till I have terrible hours at work.
[00:41:56] Speaker K: That's true. I'm going to call my wife and tell her we're going to have a date.
[00:41:59] Speaker A: It was awesome.
[00:42:00] Speaker B: I think it's appropriate. I mean, you might. That might give all kinds of people.
[00:42:04] Speaker A: He will agree with me. I couldn't talk. Yeah, it was awesome.
[00:42:09] Speaker B: He had the time of his life.
[00:42:10] Speaker A: He loved it.
We walked down hand in hand. It was so romantic.
[00:42:15] Speaker J: My wife and I have a weekly dinner date night. And so when the time comes.
[00:42:19] Speaker B: Yeah, there you go.
[00:42:20] Speaker J: We'll have to incorporate that. That is a date idea.
[00:42:23] Speaker I: I have never heard.
[00:42:24] Speaker A: It was awesome. It was awesome.
[00:42:26] Speaker K: I could bring you a cat to wash.
[00:42:32] Speaker A: Oh, my goodness. Thank y' all so much.
[00:42:34] Speaker L: Yes.
[00:42:35] Speaker K: Fast track.
[00:42:36] Speaker A: Fast track.
[00:42:36] Speaker K: Thank you so much for having us on.
[00:42:39] Speaker B: And if somebody interested in more information about any of the services, use yours specifically or anything.
[00:42:45] Speaker I: Yes.
[00:42:45] Speaker K: Contact my office and ask for it by name. Fast track. It can save a lot of time.
[00:42:50] Speaker H: And your primary care.
[00:42:51] Speaker J: The primary care physician is the. Is one you would talk to about
[00:42:55] Speaker B: that as well to get referred and then they can help get the appointment and all that.
[00:43:00] Speaker J: And it's being socialized to the primary care providers as well as an opportunity for their patients to, like Dr. Ellis said, not take a day off work. One thing I wanted to mention is, in addition to that is, you know, this is a program that actually, you know, Dr. Ellis was a big fan of and brought up to us in the very beginning. So, you know, this, this kind of process has, you know, a high quality surgeon backing it. And so we're excited about that. But that's. That was really the reason we came on is to talk about that. But just to add, you know, a few other things. You know, we're putting about a million dollars into the facility infrastructure, pipe relining and things like that and in updating our H VAC system.
[00:43:47] Speaker B: So we.
[00:43:47] Speaker A: Cool.
[00:43:47] Speaker D: Some of those.
[00:43:48] Speaker B: Not very fancy, shiny, super important.
[00:43:51] Speaker A: Exactly, Exactly.
[00:43:53] Speaker J: I always love to talk about those things that we're doing. The Ascension St Thomas is investing in DeKalb Hospital to make sure that we can do the great things that Dr. Ellis is doing. And, you know, just really excited about that and excited. Excited that we have these new clinical programs, you know, in a small town where sometimes you won't. You won't have that, but we do, and we can provide that here.
[00:44:17] Speaker A: We're so blessed.
[00:44:18] Speaker B: Yes, we are. And we appreciate you willing to come on and talk about the cab. Talk about the CAB. County and the services that Ascension DeKalb is having.
[00:44:28] Speaker K: Well, thanks for giving us the opportunity.
[00:44:30] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:44:30] Speaker A: Well, if you have any more good stories, we'll bring you back every month.
[00:44:32] Speaker K: Got a cat to wash. We want
[00:44:34] Speaker B: to see that cat next time.
[00:44:36] Speaker A: Oh, let's see here. Jen, where are we? Okay.
[00:44:39] Speaker B: Oh, we've got one of my favorite events. Yes, sir. Smithville Municipal Airport. We have a manager.
[00:44:48] Speaker A: Manager. Oh, my goodness.
So many good things about him. John, Suzanne, welcome. Oh, and you know what else he's got? Do you.
Oh, my goodness. How are you? Good.
[00:45:00] Speaker L: How are y'?
[00:45:00] Speaker I: All?
[00:45:00] Speaker B: Great.
[00:45:01] Speaker A: So y' all scared after hearing all of our crazy stuff going on Story, cat washing store.
Well, Jen, how is it being a new manager?
[00:45:13] Speaker M: It's excellent. Very. Been very welcoming. Everybody's been great. The community's been excellent to be a part of.
[00:45:18] Speaker B: How long have you been there?
[00:45:19] Speaker M: I've been there since October.
[00:45:21] Speaker B: October.
Yeah. Not yet. A year even.
[00:45:24] Speaker A: Not yet.
[00:45:24] Speaker M: But I'm enjoying it. Enjoying every day. Lots of support from the city and everybody, so.
[00:45:30] Speaker A: Well, I've been hearing really good things about this. This event you had over Memorial Day weekend. That was awesome. And Lee, you and Jenny have been telling stories. I mean, Beth is relating all your stories back to me, and I'm like, well. And Josh. I don't know Josh Williams. I don't know if you know him.
Yeah, they tell me all the airport news. I love to hear about it.
[00:45:50] Speaker L: We had a fantastic turnout. What we did started about five years ago. We had a lot of stuff at the house. Memorabilia, your stuff from both of our fathers.
[00:45:59] Speaker B: Okay, so that didn't start about five years ago. No, no, I've seen that basement. And it's been there, you know, lots of collections of amazing cool things from World War II.
[00:46:10] Speaker L: It really is. And majority of the stuff is from Jenny's father and my father that we
[00:46:16] Speaker H: were able to keep.
[00:46:17] Speaker L: You know, they were both pilots during World War II. So we've got a lot of stuff pertaining to aviation, of course. And so we decided to try to put this exhibit together, to share it with everyone, not just for them to come out and. And look at it, but to learn from it. You know, it's. It's a learning experience to come out there. And we had a fantastic turnout over Memorial Weekend Sunday and Monday. We probably had well over 150 people
[00:46:45] Speaker H: that came out to see and.
[00:46:47] Speaker L: And a lot of them commented, I didn't know that.
[00:46:50] Speaker H: I didn't know this.
[00:46:51] Speaker L: So it was. It was a really learning process. And I. And I love talking. Talking about it and answering their questions. And it had some really good questions.
[00:46:59] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:47:00] Speaker L: And so we try to do that.
We've tried to do it before, but now we've got it a little perfected.
[00:47:06] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:47:07] Speaker L: And so we'll do it again on the 4th of July and have it open.
[00:47:11] Speaker A: Oh, that'll be good.
[00:47:13] Speaker L: But it's not that we just open it up at certain times. It's always there. If anybody is interested and would like to see it someday, all they have to do is give me a call. Your contact come by, you know, go over there, open it up and let them tour it.
[00:47:26] Speaker B: You know, so it's actually in one of. Just for radio. It's in one of your. One of the hangars there at the airport that the hangar can open up. And you actually have an airplane.
[00:47:38] Speaker H: Yes.
[00:47:38] Speaker B: You have uniforms. You have actual tools and devices that someone can see how.
I mean, World War II was the beginning. Beginning of the fighter pilot.
[00:47:51] Speaker L: Yes.
[00:47:52] Speaker B: And these guys had to have nerves of steel. I mean, you think about the willingness they were. They were up there in fabric airplanes.
[00:48:01] Speaker H: Yeah.
[00:48:03] Speaker B: Young guys flying in a war where. Where things were shooting at them.
[00:48:08] Speaker L: Yes.
[00:48:08] Speaker B: I mean, to think. To think of those stories and to be able to come and actually see you. Your.
Your family involvement in that. Amazing.
[00:48:21] Speaker A: It's going to be open again for July for you to be there to talk about it. Well, John, what are some of the services you provide at the airport?
[00:48:28] Speaker M: Some of the services we provide. We have jet A fuel, 100 low lead fuel for aircraft. We have hangars. We have a crew car, nice lobby for pilots coming in and out.
[00:48:38] Speaker A: They can just Use a courtesy car.
[00:48:39] Speaker M: Yeah, they can come. They fly in, take the courtesy car, come to Smithville and explore some of our restaurants and places.
[00:48:44] Speaker A: Oh, I need to put some tourism brochures down there.
[00:48:46] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, please do.
[00:48:47] Speaker M: Please do anything from the city that we can promote people who visit the airport. Be great.
[00:48:53] Speaker B: Well, there is a lot of traffic. I mean, I'm. I'm surprised, of course. I work at Star, Right. So I see. I see airplanes coming and going. And you all are doing a great job of making use of that resource in our community. But it's good to know that there are people who. Who only look at a community that has an airport.
You know, whether it's a business or private looking, looking to build a house or buy a house. That is an important aspect of our community, of our farmers.
[00:49:27] Speaker A: So the airport is located at 338 Airport Lane, aptly named.
And how do they contact you if somebody has any questions?
[00:49:34] Speaker M: Yes, if they want to contact me, we have a website called flysmith.
It's got all of our events information, some basic history on the airport, and a contact form at the bottom where you can reach out.
[00:49:47] Speaker A: Yeah, it was a great website. Flysmithfield.com.
[00:49:50] Speaker M: yes.
[00:49:50] Speaker B: Awesome.
[00:49:51] Speaker A: Well, thank you all for being here this morning.
Yes. Come back anytime.
[00:49:55] Speaker B: And Lee, you know, Lee has the radio voice, so I know he's especially welcome anytime.
[00:50:02] Speaker A: Well, always a pleasure.
[00:50:04] Speaker L: Y' all come see us.
[00:50:05] Speaker B: Thank you.
Thank you so much.
[00:50:07] Speaker A: Well, Coco, Kathy Hendrickson is here from the Justin Potter Library. Well, the. The whole library system we have here.
[00:50:15] Speaker B: So was. How was orders am Americans?
[00:50:18] Speaker N: It was great. We had a wonderful turnout. We had about 160. We're counting the vendors, about 160 people. I do want to thank all the vendors, the businesses and organizations in town for all their support. We had. I was giving door prizes away for about 4, 40 minutes, and we had some wonderful door prizes. And I appreciate the businesses. We couldn't do it without everyone. I want to thank my library board and also the senior centers for their support. We couldn't do it without them. And then I have a great staff that keeps me sane. So, anyway, we already got next year's date. May 5, May 12. I just got to find my entertainment for next year. So everybody loved Ben Franklin. Benjamin Franklin.
[00:50:53] Speaker A: Oh, he was popular, huh?
[00:50:54] Speaker N: He was. So it was a great time, all the vendors and everyone for support. So we had a wonderful time waiting for next year. The thing that's coming up now is our children's summer reading program on Eartha story that starts Tomorrow.
I've had about 115 kids Sign up so far.
[00:51:11] Speaker A: Wow.
[00:51:12] Speaker N: We had a big. We've been busy this week. We've had 70, 80, 90 people in the library this every day this week. So since we started last week.
[00:51:19] Speaker A: So great news.
[00:51:20] Speaker N: But every Thursday at the county complex at 2 o', clock, we will have a program, entertainment for kids. They can sign up there.
They don't have to come to the programs to participate in the summer reading program. Just sign up.
[00:51:33] Speaker B: But who wouldn't want to come?
[00:51:34] Speaker A: I know who.
[00:51:36] Speaker N: Tomorrow's Mr. Bond, Science Guys and DTC Photo Booth. The 11th is Ed Gribbin, State park rangers and animal friends. Thursday the 18th at 2 at Candy Complex is Barry Mitchell's Fossil Fun House show.
[00:51:47] Speaker A: Oh, I want to go.
[00:51:48] Speaker N: And then our final, final, final party. So they get their super certificates and their goodie bags and their free book. We do give them a free book is the Nashville zoo. And the DeKalb County Health Department will be there. So we're gonna have a fun time. We have readers and listeners so they can be read to or the kids. Kids can read to their brothers and sisters if they want to. Yeah, we just promote reading during the summer.
[00:52:08] Speaker A: So you gonna wear your big hat?
I like the big hat.
[00:52:16] Speaker N: 615-597-4359. Facebook or our Instagram or our website at decablabrist. Net. And all the people that contributed to the older American state. Check our Facebook. We have listed everyone further that supported us.
[00:52:31] Speaker A: Okay, so my next guest is online.
[00:52:33] Speaker B: We're gonna be quick because we want to give.
[00:52:36] Speaker A: Jeff McMillan is coming on here to talk about the fair. Let's see if I've got him here.
[00:52:40] Speaker B: And here we have.
[00:52:42] Speaker A: Hey, Jeff, you there?
[00:52:44] Speaker H: I am.
[00:52:45] Speaker A: Okay, you're on the radio and tv.
So I tell you, y' all have upped your game with the DeKalb County Fair this year. It is amazing. I've been looking at everything.
[00:52:55] Speaker H: Well, I appreciate that and thank y' all for having us.
This year will be the 170th year that we've had the DeKalb County Fair. I feel like I've been there for most of them.
[00:53:08] Speaker A: But
[00:53:10] Speaker H: this year, our theme is star stripes and midway lights to try to celebrate the 250th.
[00:53:17] Speaker A: Oh, great.
[00:53:20] Speaker H: Something.
And we did. We did have to step it up a little bit. And something we did that we haven't done is do a fair book this year.
[00:53:30] Speaker B: Great.
[00:53:31] Speaker H: We're real proud of the fair book. They're available at most businesses around banks, libraries, different places. And if you don't get one or you can't get a hold of one, you can go to our website, the KelpCounty Fair.com and click on the 2026 DeKalb County Fair program.
And it's this, it's the book is on the website.
[00:53:58] Speaker B: I love that because that'll show all the events, right? It'll show all the events, all the things that are going on. Awesome.
[00:54:05] Speaker H: It does it show and it shows. All of our, our sponsors have been so generous to us. I won't even try to mention all of them, but please support these people. And I'm so thankful for the sponsorship. And this year we're being able to do a free admission night at the fair on Wednesday.
[00:54:27] Speaker B: That's the 24th, right? Wednesday the 24th.
[00:54:31] Speaker H: 24th, yeah.
[00:54:33] Speaker B: Which is great.
[00:54:35] Speaker H: It is. And we have technically Tanya Sullivan and Shea Walters that sponsored this nap. So we're very appreciative of them. And they have four local businesses here in DeKalb county that sponsored that night for us. And we're very appreciative to that.
Kind of go over Some of the new things that we're going to be doing this year is of course, the bingo is not new, but very popular.
[00:55:09] Speaker F: Very popular.
[00:55:10] Speaker H: We're going to be doing that three nights at the Lions Pavilion after the pageants. And that is on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.
I said, let me tell you, let me make sure. I'm telling you right.
[00:55:24] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:55:26] Speaker H: And then something else that's new is we're going to do wrestling this year.
Been some time since we did that. And so we're going to try that again.
We have, we are doing an entertainment stage where the barber shop was. We're increasing that porch to kind of make it look kind of old timey and look like a country stage. And going to be using that for an entertainment stage. And to save on time, if you'll just go to the website, click on the entertainment page, it'll tell you who's going to be there each night.
Our cornhole. We've kind of stepped it up a little bit this year. The DTC Blitz, which is our local sports people, they're going to be doing the cornhole tournament for us this year. And, and they've got a, they've got a new event which is called Shuck it. And it's, it's 10.
[00:56:31] Speaker B: Don't say that too fast.
[00:56:36] Speaker H: 10 bags for $10 and winner takes all the money. So that's, that's a big deal.
[00:56:45] Speaker A: Pageants and well, Jeff, is there anything we want to close up with? Because they're giving me the old signal we're out of time.
[00:56:52] Speaker H: I, I, that's reason I was trying to rush through. So again, thank y' all for, for y' all support of the fair.
Again, just go to the county affair.com get any information that you need about the fair or contact one of us and we'll be happy to, to do that. And thank you again for all y' all do for us.
[00:57:14] Speaker A: Yeah, we appreciate all you do and all of the South. The chamber will be there one night to present the 170 year milestone award. I'm so excited. Yeah. And thank you, Jeff, for all you do really, really, really well.
[00:57:27] Speaker H: Thank y' all too.
[00:57:28] Speaker B: All right.
Thank you.
[00:57:30] Speaker H: Byebye.
[00:57:31] Speaker A: I gotta quickly, I know we're out of town, but leadership.
[00:57:33] Speaker B: The cat leadership.
Graduation is June 16th. We'll, we'll talk more about graduation.
[00:57:39] Speaker A: Yeah, August.
[00:57:40] Speaker B: But the sponsors. The sponsors. But I do want to say big a big thank you to the Center Hill Lake Day folks, Corps of Engineers at Grabbing State park and Tenaco Clean Air was our corporate sponsor. Want to say big thank you to park manager Brad Halfacre for captaining, captaining the boat ride. And a big shout out to Isaac and all of the other class of 2026 graduates. Such a great year for leadership. DeKalb may have been the best class ever. And we'll talk more about everything else in August.
[00:58:14] Speaker N: Why don't you say that every year?
[00:58:17] Speaker A: Could you mention the sponsors real quick for the graduation?
[00:58:19] Speaker B: So our sponsors, Star Brands, April Martin, Exp Realty, DTC Communications, Smithville assembly of God and Sissy Fish Realty. We want to say huge thank you to all of our graduation sponsors.
[00:58:32] Speaker A: Couldn't do it without you.
[00:58:33] Speaker B: Couldn't do it.
[00:58:34] Speaker A: The chamber wants to help promote your neither spot special events. Call 561-559-74163 or email me at directorecabcountychamber.org tag me on Facebook, whatever. I'll have you spread it.
[00:58:45] Speaker B: That's right.
[00:58:45] Speaker N: Thank you to all our guests this morning. And we are grateful to WJLE Radio and DTC TV sponsoring our chamber chat.

It's been a lot happy June and July, everyone.
